What could have been

What could have
been? I ask myself this every day, As I look back on May 23, 2017, I
feel myself drop into an internal abyss of regret and fear. It was a
bright and humid, sunny day, and I had just got done with basketball
practice. I was so exhausted, I carelessly jumped in my car and
started my journey home when I heard a ring from under my passenger
seat and saw the light of my phone illuminating the ground below me.
I frantically reached…then everything changed. At the time I didn’t
have the proper drivers ed on driving undistracted, I thought
nothing like that could ever happen to me “I’m too careful for
that” I’d preach to myself. With the proper education on
distracted driving “what could have been” would be my reality. As
I grow into a woman I recognize my failure to protect myself and my
peers on the road and from now on I control my urges to check my
phone while driving. I want to be an example to others of the dangers
of distracted driving, I know that by sharing my story to my peers
and through social media people will see how getting into a car
accident can happen to anyone, which can reduce the number of deaths
related to driving.
