2020 Drivers ed Essay Contest Submission

Drivers ed teaches new drivers the risks of driving and the caution that is needed. The course explains the rules of the road, proper driving behavior, and common characteristics of automobiles that all drivers should know. Knowledge on all things driving-related greatly reduces possible accidents and helps drivers to be aware of abnormalities. For example, being wary of a car swerving between lanes or driving in a reckless way will keep a new driver from coming into an accident. Knowing to slow down when pedestrians are nearby can also reduce possible accidents.

Proper education should always be prioritized with new drivers. Course instructors and driving coaches should both enforce safe driving techniques, as well as teaching that driving is a privilege that should not be taken lightly. Having open conversations with new drivers throughout the learning process is also important so any insecurities or questions can be addressed.

I have been in three mild car accidents; thankfully none of them were severe. However, there have been many times when I have witnessed my family members driving irresponsibly. My mother and grandmother occasionally run red lines, especially when they are in a rush. When I was younger, my father would almost always have a cup of alcohol with him while driving. Fortunately, he never got into an accident, as a result.

As a new driver, I plan to adhere to all rules to keep myself and others safe. I will always ensure that I and any passengers will wear seatbelts; I will always check for abnormalities with the vehicle that I drive and address them; and I will only drive when I am clear-headed and can make quick and safe decisions.
