Let’s Build a Future

I have been in one minor accident since earning my license. It occurred after some events that proved to be keeping my mind off the road, leading me to rear end a car in front of me. Since that incident, I realized I need much more time on the road, with better instruction than just from my parents. It makes me think about building a house, which takes a variety of tools, and proper training.

The importance of drivers ed in reducing the amount of deaths in accidents is immeasurable. With the proper tools, teacher, and experience, a man could build a house. With the proper understanding of road rules, expert advice to deal with unexpected situations, and the extra time on the road with someone there giving real time feedback, a driver would be prepared for solo driving. Without the proper tools, any number of things could go wrong, or bad habits could develop, leading to the unfortunate accidents. Not all teachers can give a new driver those tools, and can even pass along broken and rusted ones. Old tools can’t always be reliable overtime. Many will rust, chip, no longer be effective.

One of the most important steps to prevent driving deaths is to remove sources of distractions. Not only cell phones, but eating at the wheel and distracting passengers as examples. With all the distractions, focus is taken away from the road, other vehicles, and the surroundings. Another would be to integrate strong drivers ed programs, at a more affordable cost to new drivers. While many cannot afford to take classes, they learn from other drivers, who may not have the best of driving habits themselves. If the education courses were more affordable, and accessible to those in less fortunate circumstances, newer stronger tools will be passed on.

As the oldest of my siblings, I pass down the many things I have learned on the road. Not only to be vigilant and aware of all that occurs in and around the car, but how to minimize distractions. Having my phone on silent and inaccessible while driving, telling others to be quiet or settle when getting too rowdy, and other general advice to encourage safer driving habits. These things are not enough to build a strong driver. With a combined effort, drivers’ education can be renewed, and stocked with the new tools needed to build a new, and safe, driving future.
