Drivers Ed is Essential
The importance of drivers ed in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving includes being taught by a professional. In any other subject, one is expected to be taught by someone who is well-educated in that topic. Why is driving any different? Just because one is an adult who possesses a driver’s license does not mean they always drive following the rules of the road.
The steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving include making drivers ed classes mandatory. In order for that to happen, those classes need to be financially available to all people. The cost of classes needs to be income-based, so that everyone can afford them. Or, they need to be government-funded.
I have thankfully not been in a car accident; however, my mother’s mother died in a car accident after being hit by a drunk driver. One of my ex-boyfriends also once drove the wrong way up a one-way street, because we had missed a turn, and he said he did not feel like going around the block again. I was extremely angry with him concerning that, as he had risked both of our safety. I explained to him that he is not above the law. Also, if someone had been coming down that road, it is possible they would have not seen us or expected us (as they would not have thought someone would be purposely coming the wrong way down a one-way street). As a result, he could have seriously hurt us and possibly someone else.
The steps that can be taken to be a better and safer driver include driving defensively. Follow the rules of the road, but drive as if everyone else is not obeying the law. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Keep your eyes moving and constantly checking your mirrors. Always leave yourself an out in case someone pulls out in front or beside you. Make sure that others on the road can always see you by following at a safe distance.
