Driving is a necessity for most people. Driving takes risks, and millions of car accidents occur yearly, with thousands of them being fatal. Driving recklessly puts other people’s lives at risk. Attitudes about safety are formed at an early age and should be important to target adolescents. Experience is more significant than age regarding crash risk in traffic. The car is viewed as a tool for meeting the demands of everyday life. Decisions have a major baring on road safety. Mastery of many different traffic situations is a vitally important skill for a driver to acquire. Good maneuvering skills alone are not good enough. I have experienced the shock of being in a car accident. I was riding in the car with my mother, and she got rear-ended at a stop light. The other driver carelessly lost control of the car by slipping his foot off the brake. Our car was damaged, and I was left with a light neck injury. I have also witnessed friends and family driving irresponsibly by texting and driving, driving over the speed limit, and tailgating other drivers. These are all examples of careless driving habits that can be avoided.
There are many steps I can take to be a better and safer driver. I embrace safety not just as a priority, but as an obsession in all settings, and at all times. I insist passengers buckle every seat. Being on time is not worth risking my life and safety. I avoid using phones while driving. Regular communication is essential for me. I stay aware of health issues such as eyesight that can affect my performance on the road. Most of all, I think of other drivers and pedestrians to save human lives.
