Safe Driving Can Save Lives

By Becca Buzzell

The importance of drivers ed is for people to know how to safely operate a vehicle and drive from place to place without endangering the lives of others. Certain measures need to be taken in order to protect lives once someone gets behind the wheel. People need to pay attention in class for starters. Teachers take the time to educate their students about the dangers of everything that could go wrong when you are out for a drive. Children could run in the street, someone might be texting and driving, or someone could fall asleep behind the wheel. These teachers prepare the population in ways that these things could happen. They tell people to be overly cautious in neighborhoods for those are the places where children reside; they say to always be aware when you are driving for someone might be texting or asleep behind the wheel and if you are aware then you will be able to react and save your own life. One big step that could be taken is to pay attention. Whether that be in the class or out on a drive. When you have all of your senses about you, then you are more aware of what is going on around you. I have had an experience where someone was driving irresponsibly. I was on the highway and my dad was driving and my dad had to break due to someone cutting him off. The guy in the car behind us thought that my dad was doing that to make him mad. So, he passed us, got in front of us, and every so often he would slam on the break and my dad almost hit him a few times. If my dad hit him, it would be his fault and the insurance would spike. Eventually we got off the highway while the other guy continued on his way. I would find a way to get away from the driver if that ever happened to me, either getting off the highway sooner or getting into another lane. At the time, I was scared to death of crashing on the highway so I was not that much help to my dad in trying to think of ways to avoid anything bad. But now, I would suggest for him to do the same, either getting off or getting onto another lane during times like this.
