Life or Death: In the Drivers Seat
When I was in drivers ed there was this video that my teacher played about these friends driving not wearing seatbelts. The driver was flung through the windshield and died on impact because she was not playing attention to the road. The others were seriously injured, and some died. See the girl hanging out the windshield really scared me straight, you need to be safe. When I saw that video, my heart broke and all I could think about was their families. They showed us this video not to scare us from driving but to show the dangers of driving. After seeing that video I became more aware and learned the good and bad things about driving. To this day I wear my seatbelt, I am aware of my surrounding’s, I drive the speed limit and I only drive when I am comfortable.
Driving is a privilege not a right. If you want to be in the group that gets to have the adventure of driving from place to place you need to learn what is means to drive. Driving does not just mean you can speed anywhere and drive recklessly, it means you have the opportunity in your lifetime to have the adventure of driving. Some people think they can do anything because they have a license and can drive a car, but the word safety never runs through their mind when they drive. Safety is the biggest part about driving you need to be aware of anything and everything, for instance distance, speed, pedestrians, weather, etc.
When you are in the driver’s seat you must be clear of mind. The reason we have drivers ed is to teach you about the rules and how to be safe. Drivers ed helps decrease death rates because it teaches us right and wrong. Drivers ed is the biggest step to learning how to drive because it instills the rules and the precautions that need to be taken when driving into your brain. You can help decrease the driving death rate by driving the speed limit, being aware, clear of mind, and comfortable. Being comfortable when driving is essential because its safer for everyone when the driver is comfortable in the driver’s seat because they know what to do and will not be nervous/dangerous.
I have not experienced a car accident my self but is has happened right in front of me before and it felt like my heart stopped because I felt like it could have been me. I think the most important step for people to become better drivers is to only drive to places that they know and are familiar with. I learned to driver on roads that I was already familiar with, so I knew how to maneuver my way around. Being comfortable and safe are words all drivers need to say/hear each time they get into the car because when your driving it either life or death. You want to comeback at the end of your adventure!
