Distractions are a driver’s kryptonite. In my experience, distractions come from uncomfortable situations. Not knowing the vehicle, passengers, and the area in which you are driving can greatly affect the comfort levels of the driver.

One of the primary focuses should be making sure you are comfortable with your vehicle. Once entering the car, you should check where everything is positioned around the dash and console. Look for the things that you don’t even necessarily think you will need for this drive, this includes: windshield wipers, emergency lights, and fog lights. Always check your mirrors so they are positioned correctly for maximum vision before moving. Make sure the seat is aligned so that your foot can reach the brake pedal and that you are able to push it all the way to the ground comfortably, without having to strain your foot. All these steps, although simple, are sometimes ignored by drivers who will hop in and go without taking the proper steps to ensure their comfort. Drivers who don’t take these steps can often be distracted later when they realize something is off or don’t know where something is located in their car, and any distraction can be dangerous for the driver and anyone else on the road.

A second key factor with being comfortable while driving is that you should be comfortable with any and all passengers in your car. Once your six months are up after getting your license it is legal to drive anyone, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is a good idea. As the driver it is your responsibility to know what distracts you and who could negatively impact your driving. If you feel slightly hesitant or uncomfortable with the idea of driving someone, whether it be family or a friend, it is ok to say no. They may be disappointed, however this is better than putting them or yourself in what could be a dangerous situation.

Ensuring your comfort behind the wheel greatly reduces distracted driving. Distractions of any kind can negatively impact your ability to drive safely. Help keep the roads safer by always being comfortable in the drivers seat, you never know when it could be the determinate factor that saves a life.
