Steps to Reduce Distracted Driving
In the age of stalkers, where everyone can see what you are doing, and you willingly share your emotions and opinions to the world – distractions are worse than they have ever been. From counting followers to adding a select few friends to your Snapchat, there are so many things happening while you are driving that you cannot miss a second. But the best thing about the internet is that whatever someone posts stays on there forever. You will not ever really miss a moment if you can look it up later, in other words – it can wait until the engine is off.
Being able to drive is a big responsibility because you oversee the safety of everyone in the car and on the road. Your friends themselves are a distraction by posting cute selfies in the car and listening to loud music. It goes without saying that doing anything while driving is distracting, not all teens are mature enough to follow that common sense. It’s up to the teens of today to break the cycle of stereotypical teen drivers that are crazy and careless. If they are going to give their friends a ride, then they must respect the driver by not distracting them with their phone. They can do so by not being on their phones while the car is moving or be on their phones silently, not trying to take pictures, or show them something on the phone.
Driving as a teenager is a privilege, the world already frowns upon the youth being allowed to do things like vape. Distracted driving and vaping can lead to death and they are ‘in-fashion’ and it is cool. Like making a cloud of smoke that fogs your windows so you cannot see where you are going. For the younger generation, multitasking has become a normal just like taking college level courses in high school. So naturally they are not afraid to do two things at once like vaping and driving. I think that to get students to stop vaping while driving, they must raise the age for vaping to 21 years old. Another method to stop vaping while driving is having a smoke detector of some sort inside the car that will not allow the car to move if there is any sign of smoke.
The younger generation prefers everything to be instant and see results instantly, there is a pressure from society to be perfect younger than they were. A kid feeling the tension to try please a potential employer by answering the phone is also deadly. There are already simple solutions when you are driving to not be on your phone, like do not disturb or put your phone in the trunk, but there is an addiction to our phones that students chose not to do these. If we do follow the suggestions, like washing our hands to stop the spread of germs, there will be reduced numbers of accidents and even deaths due to distracted driving.
