The Importance of Drivers ed
Drivers ed can be essential in preventing bad driving habits. Deaths that happen as a result of driving can be attributed to many things. One of these is the usage of a phone while driving. This can be due to talking, texting, checking social media, or looking at the phone in general. In 2019, 8.5 percent of fatal motor vehicle crashes were caused by distracted drivers. Another reason for driver deaths is fatigue. Driving when one is tired reduces the awareness of the driver. An accident can be caused when a sleepy driver veers into another lane or goes off the road completely.
Drivers ed classes are extremely important in reducing fatal accidents. Drivers classes and tests should be more comprehensive and include defensive driving techniques, distracted driving, and awareness driving simulations as well as tips for dangerous conditions, like driving in bad weather, driving when tired, and driving in case of a sudden flat tire or blocked windshield. If drivers ed books and tests included more of these situations, it would help raise awareness in young people and older people who have been driving for many years. Also, phones should automatically disable apps except for GPS apps when people are driving. This might annoy people, but it could be successful in reducing distracted driving deaths.
I was almost in an accident while on my way to school in my junior year of high school. We were driving on a road through an intersection and someone ran the red light and almost crashed into us. Luckily, my Dad saw them from his peripheral vision and stopped before they hit our car. One way I can become a better driver is by making sure I am always anticipating that other drivers are not paying attention. Also, I can leave early so that I am not in a rush to get to my destination. I can drive with the flow of traffic and not speed. Also, I know that I can not drive when I am tired or not feeling well. I can put my phone away before I drive as well. I know it is my responsibility to tell others to focus on driving if I see them doing something dangerous, help them with their phone if they are trying to navigate with a GPS app or offer to drive if I notice they are too tired to drive.
