It is crucial that young drivers receive drivers ed in order to reduce the number of deaths that occur while driving. Too many kids these days think that nothing could possibly happen until it does. We are not invincible. We must educate ourselves more so that we do not end up in these situations. Each of us has a responsibility, when we get into a car, to abide by the rule of the road, to keep our eyes on the road, to pay attention, and to drive safely. Parents need to speak to their children about driving as well. Explain the rules and consequences of such rules if broken. Explain why driving under the influence is bad. Why being distracted by a cell phone is detrimental to you and others around you. Learn the rules so that you can prevent something from happening.

I have witnessed an accident occur right in front of my eyes, recently. I had just left to pick up my mother’s prescription when it began hailing. Being that the driving conditions were not good, I slowed down. I noticed the car on the other side of the road did not slow down whatsoever, and thus began to swerve onto my side of the road. Looking ahead I noticed that no one else was behind this car, so I quickly changed my lane too. This car crashed into the side of the road, which was in this case, the best thing for them to do because of the conditions of the road. I knew to slow down and keep my distance, but this other driver did not slow down. What resulted was an accident, which most likely resulted in an injury, but could have been worse. We need to be mindful of these things because they could happen at any moment.

I am going, to be honest, I have witnessed friends drive way too fast at times. It worries me because I do not want anything to happen to them. I remind them to be careful, but I wish I could do more. I wish I could always be there to remind them, but I can’t. I will be a safer driver by following the rules of the road and being smart, but I will also remind others to do the same, especially those I care about. Remind them to drive safely, put that phone out of sight, pay attention to the road ahead and your surroundings, and be careful.
