Bad Driving and How to Beat It

Driving has become a basic necessity in the daily life of American citizens, and though it is commonly practiced amongst almost all people, there are many difficulties and tragedies that may be caused by ignorant drivers that can easily be avoided.

Driving education has been put in place for a long time to be one of the said ways of avoiding accidents, by teaching people how to respond to signals given along the road and ways to react to certain situations that may cause accident. This helps ensure that drivers know what they’re doing while they’re on the road and increases the safety of all while driving. Following the guidelines provided during the classes can help reduce injury and death, as well as general risk to property damage, but those are not the only steps to be taken for the sake of safety.

Avoiding driving while intoxicated or otherwise disoriented would assist in making clear decisions and allowing for better reactions to risky situations. It is also necessary that drivers are able to perceive signs correctly to lower fatality rates, thus it is be highly recommended that vision corrections are applied if needed.

Personally, I have nearly seen a situation of the former of the two. A family member was enticed to drink while driving under the pretense that they knew their limit and the effects so they would go too far and consume too much. I have also been witness of a friend who drove without a full license, only permit, because he needed to help provide for his family and was unable to get the license immediately, though it was a goal for him in the nearby future. Both of these are situations of irresponsible driving, and it is recommended against following in those steps due to the risk it puts both themselves and others in.

Just because the driver may not believe they are at fault doesn’t mean silence and ignorance is an answer. Even if it is family or friend that are driving and being irresponsible, it is necessary to speak up and work to stop their detrimental behaviors. It is always best to take a stand, when you are able, against irresponsible driving, it may be enough to deter them from continuing and thus making the road safer for everyone. For oneself, following the laws and practices put in place is a good way to stay safe as well. Following the speed limit, practicing defensive driving over aggressive, and keeping an eye out for the behaviors and paths of other drivers are excellent ways to start.

Driving can and should be a safe practice with the tools we already have set in place, and all it takes to make it as safe as possible is for every individual to step up and do their part. Drive safe, and help those around you be safe as well.
