In The Driver’s Seat

The Importance of Being a Safe and Educated Driver

“I’m so excited!”, exclaimed Mila as she sat in the rear seat, buckling herself in the seatbelt of her mom’s 2019 Kia Sorento. Mila and her mom were heading to her grandparent’s house. Mila was going to stay the weekend with her grandparents and ride bikes. As they were heading south on highway 8, Mia’s mom saw a dark blue 2011 Toyota Camry heading towards them head on. She tried to avoid the car but it was unavoidable. The Toyota Camry slammed head on into them. Hours later, Mia and her mom were discharged from the hospital. They had some minor scratches and bumps but thankfully nothing fatal. They later found out that the person at fault was under the influence of prescription medication.

If the person at fault had been a safe and educated diver, they would have made a decision to not drive while under the influence of prescription medication and there would have been a less chance of them hitting another car head on while driving. In this essay, the following three reasons will be given on the importance of being a safe and educated driver: first, being a safe and educated driver is important because it can decrease the number of deaths as the result of driving, second, it can bring awareness to others on the importance of being a safe and educated driver, and lastly, being a safe and educated driver can decrease the rate of insurance premiums.

First, being a safe and educated driver is important because it can decrease the number of deaths by driving and thus driver education can play a vital role in reducing that number. Driver education can equip a person to be a safe driver, therefore reducing the number of deaths by driving. Additionally some steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths by driving is making people aware of the statistics of the number of deaths by driving via the media, your local community, and nationwide. A petition can even be started on providing more resources and classes on educating people on safe driving.

Second, being a safe and educated driver is important because it can bring awareness to others on the importance of being a safe and educated driver. Actions speak louder than words hence when others see safe driving implemented, they too can be positively influenced. This can result in them becoming a safe driver and building upon their knowledge of safe driving. Additionally, the steps that I can take to be a better and safer driver is to follow traffic laws, not take driving personal, not become distracted under any circumstances, be proactive and prepare ahead of time when traveling. I can also share with my friends, family, coworkers, and others the importance of being a safe driver and how we all can play a role in helping to protect one another. I remember at 14 years old, I was in the car with my stepmom. She was a diabetic and was losing her eyesight at the time but still decided to drive. As we were going up a hill, she turned too far and hit a light pole, causing the car to flip over on one side. The car only flipped once, luckily it didn’t continue to flip because we would have crashed into a brick wall. This was a scary situation because it was hard for us to get out of the car. If my stepmom had been a safe and educated driver at the time, she would never have decided to drive knowing she had poor eyesight. Also I’ve witnessed my friends texting and driving, eating and driving, speeding etc and everytime it happens, I speak up.

Lastly, being a safe and educated driver can help decrease the rate of insurance premiums. Getting into an accident caused by you will most likely increase the rate of your insurance premiums. Safely speaking, the decrease in vehicle accidents can help lower car insurance costs in your area and even nationwide when there are more safe and educated drivers. The decrease in the rate of insurance premiums would be beneficial to anyone who is paying for car insurance.

In conclusion, being a safe and educated driver is important because it can decrease the number of deaths by driving, bring awareness to others on the importance of being a safe and educated driver ,and can help decrease the rate of insurance premiums. Driver education can play a vital role in decreasing the number of deaths by driving and being a good example by modeling safe driving can help bring awareness to others on the importance of this issue. With the number of accidents decreasing, the rate of insurance premiums could decrease. Everyone’s lives matter, and now that you’re a little aware of the importance of being a safe and educated driver, make it a priority to get driver education and practice safe driving.
