2021 Drivers Education

When it comes to safe driving, education is extremely important, especially when it comes to newer drivers. Just like everything else, driving is a skill and takes a lot of time to learn. It has been proven that new drivers are more likely to get into a car crash than people with multiple years of driving experience. With this information, we can know that properly educating the new drivers can be very beneficial in reducing crashes, especially fatal ones.

Proper education is important because many crashes are formed by inexperience and lack of confidence. Proper education can include; harder tests, more lessons, and more experience behind the wheel with a trained instructor. These things are all important, but specifically, testing is the way to know someone’s ability in something. A weak or easy test where most people can pass easily without paying attention to a lesson is not a good test. Tougher testing can drastically reduce crashes because the harder the test, the more work people will have to put into passing it. Driving, being an important part of life yet also dangerous, is something that people should have to put many hours of hard work into because of the potential cost of a mistake. Just like creating the cars, or planes, or other big machinery, the people creating them need to have precise measurements and the ability to double and triple check their work because lives are at risk if they are wrong. The same precautions should be taken when it comes to learning how to drive. The necessity of having more lessons goes hand in hand with harder tests, and more lessons puts more information in learners’ brains about driving. Making each student driver have more experience by looking and learning. More experience behind the wheel with a trained instructor can be crucial when limiting deaths by car crashes. Student drivers now only have to take 6 behind the wheel lessons. 6 lessons is nowhere near enough time to learn how to drive safely enough to be on the roads. There are many parts to driving and a mistake could be fatal, 6 lessons with an hour of driving in each lesson is a small amount of time for the large amount of time they will be driving on a weekly basis soon after. These things help show the importance of driver education because without proper education, new drivers are unable to be ready when going on the roads, creating dangerous scenarios for themselves and everyone around them.

I have been in only one car crash, and it was when my grandma was driving, but I have seen many people that I know drive recklessly. My brother, for example, got into a car crash when he was 17. He didn’t stop or even slow down enough when coming to a stop sign because he thought it was an all way stop. Unfortunately it was not and the other car coming perpendicular to him did not have to stop and therefore didn’t. My brother ended up hitting that car into another car and causing thousands of dollars worth of cost to everyone, $17,000 to his car alone. This accident was fully his fault but could have been prevented with more and proper education. Although this was a mistake, it never should’ve happened. Luckily, no one was hurt and the situation didn’t get worse. If my brother had been paying attention more and cared more about the rules of the road, the accident never would’ve happened. I believe that if he had more driving education or more possible punishment for breaking the rules the situation wouldn’t have unfolded the way it did. As more education would have fully cemented the idea that you need to stop at a stop sign and more punishment would’ve made him worried about getting into a crash and therefore double check his idea of whether or not to stop at the stop sign.

I can take many steps to being a safe driver that would help myself as well as the people around me. Personally, I do not speed much but I should still slow my average speed down to the speed limit. I should also take more time observing my surroundings and not being distracted as distracted driving is one of the main leading causes of crashes. Having myself change these things about my driving could be very beneficial for me as well as for the people I drive places with. As I am a senior, I have many younger friends that are unable to drive themselves. Therefore I drive them when they need a ride. If I were to change my driving to being safer, they would naturally become safer drivers when they start driving as I am an influence to them, just like the people that drove me around were influences to me. This could even go all the way to when I have kids, as my kids will grow up watching me drive and the better I drive the better they will drive. This can also help with the people I drive around now as if they try to be safe drivers the same thing will happen with their children.
