Safe driving is incredibly important to me because I have had my own experience with the danger of the roads. A year and a half ago, I was getting ready to drive to work. As I was about to turn left, I looked both ways and I saw that there were some cars coming toward me, but they were afar off. Remembering that my parents said I should not hesitate, I knew I could turn before they were near, so I turned. Unfortunately, there was a car coming at me from the other side. The driver must have been speeding, because I did not see them when I looked left before. I pulled out, and noticed the car coming at me. I tried to speed up and get out of their way, but it was too late. I remember closing my eyes and bracing for impact and opening them and being in a partially destroyed car. I did not know what to do, so I got out of the car to survey the damage. It was bad. The car was totaled. Thankfully, I was not horribly injured. I had a cut on my arm from the broken window glass that needed stitches and I was bruised up. Later, the policeman who was writing the report about the accident said that my accident was fortunate as far as accidents go. If my car had been hit a little closer to the driver’s seat, I could have been badly injured or even killed. I am glad that I came away from the accident with only a few scratches, but the experience taught me a lesson on the utter importance of driving safely.
Safe driving is imperative to health. People rarely realize that when they get into a car to drive, they are about to wield a 4,000-pound weapon that could kill if used incorrectly. From my experience, I learned that accidents could happen even when you are least expecting it, so you must be on your guard at all times. Sure, the law is there to prevent many accidents, but unless one takes safe driving as their own responsibility and guards it over their own comfort, they will never truly drive safe. Each person must choose for themselves to drive safely as a conscious decision every moment in the car, otherwise they risk being harmed. Accidents happen when the dangers of driving are not taken seriously.
For instance, I should have taken driving much more seriously before my accident. There are several things I could have done that would have prevented it from happening. The first thing I should have done was be more alert. I was off my guard because I had just been resting at my house and I was about to go back to my work, which was only a few minutes’ drive away. This caused me to think of it as routine and to assume that there was no real danger. The idea of driving being routine and the same every time is a big reason of why people get into accidents. It is imperative to be aware of how each new driving experience can lead to new decisions and new dangers. The second action I should have changed would be not being cautious enough. I thought I could pull in front of some cars that were coming, but, in my haste, I missed seeing a car coming from the other direction. If I had seen the car, I would not have gone, and I could have avoided the accident all together. Being cautious is a good idea to remember when driving and it is always better to be overly cautious and alive than risk-taking and injured or dead. Finally, it is important to stay in the speed limit when driving. The speed limits are set to keep people safe. I was not speeding in my accident, but the other person was, and that is what caused me to not see them, and they caused more damage to my car and possibly me. Speeding seems like a good idea to get places faster, but it does not really get people places very much faster and it decreases reaction time. The faster a person is going, the less time they must react to a surprise on the road. Staying within the speed limits is a law for a reason. If speeding, being cautious, and being alert had been better accounted for while I was driving, the accident I was in could have been prevented, which is why safe driving is so important.
Through my experience of driving and being in an accident, I have decided that going into healthcare would be a great route for helping keep the roads safe. Healthcare takes care of the people who could potentially drive under the influence, thus making driving safer. It can also teach the dangers of driving unsafely and give people resources to drive safely. While healthcare can help with education of safe driving, it mostly helps with the aftermath of driving accidents and injuries. Many people learn to be cautious on the road from experiences with accidents driving themselves. Healthcare helps keep people alive and well so that they can learn from those experiences and drive safer in the future. I want to be able to heal people so that they get a second change at driving. Though many accidents are preventable, some are not and healthcare is important to help those people who are injured in an accident. Healthcare is the career I have chosen because I want to help people who get injured in accidents so that they have a second chance at life.
From my experience with my accident, I learned the importance of driving safely. I learned that every driving experience is potentially dangerous, and drivers must be on their guard at all times. My accident especially taught me how preventable it was. I could have prevented it by being more alert, because then I would not have assumed it was routine and this would have made me more aware of the dangers that could happen. I should have been more cautious and been more safe than sorry. I also learned that speeding causes damage and it is not worth it just to save a little time. Because of this learning experience, I found that healthcare is a great career for keeping people safe and saving them if there was an accident. Healthcare plays an important part in safe driving because it gives people a second chance to drive correctly. Safety in driving is an imperative and it plays an important part in preventing accidents and injuries.
