Accidently Irresponsible
I have been in a car accident and I have witnessed a friend driving irresponsibly however, I have never witnessed both at the same time. Both events were scary and had a similar effect on me. One day during a break between my classes I met up with a friend who was done for the day. We decided we would go off campus and grab some food since that is something we would usually do when we were both free for a lengthy amount of time. On our way to get food there is a hill where you cannot really see the other side until you are at the top, however it is used as an intersection for the college kids in the area. As we were driving and listening to music a car had stopped very short due to people standing in thew street next to the sidewalk. I did not even realize what had happened at first, I just remember screaming. The lady explained that she thought the students were going to walk because they weren’t exactly on the sidewalk. During that time my friend was not driving irresponsibly she did press on the breaks it just was not enough space and time so there was a collision.
I do have friends that decide they want to be irresponsible and may even enjoy the adrenaline rush of driving fast and dangerous. Being a college student, I often witness a lot of people who believe that they are fine driving intoxicated because it is something they do often or because they don’t feel that intoxicated. I always encourage my friends not to do that especially if we are drinking at my place. I would always offer for my friends to stay the night or at least until they sober up. Another step I usually tell my friends never to drive when going out to bars even if they say they are not going to drink. Usually, they go from not wanting to drink, to just having one or two and the more they drink they still may try to drive home which is extremely dangerous. Almost as dangerous as driving far beyond the speed limit.
I have a friend that is into car racing but the illegal kind. He does not actually partake in it however he finds enjoyment in driving fast on a highway that isn’t busy which can still be dangerous. His belief is that he has complete control over his car and trust himself which is still a scary thing because there are so many other factors that can play a part. I’ve realized that a lot of people who drive irresponsibly use the excuse that they know their car or their body and have complete control over the matter. When the truth is that even if they do have complete control over their body and their car there are other people on the road who may not have as much control. Since you are moving so fast or not as aware as you believe yourself to be you cannot react to the other driver as fast as you may not to. Or you may react, but you make the road decision due to you lack of awareness of another car.
