Safe Driving Essay

One of the most important parts of driving is being safe. One of the most important steps to being safe while operating a vehicle is taking Drivers Ed. The importance of Drivers Ed in regards being safe are the lessons about how to be safe while driving. From my personal experience, I learned the best ways to stay safe in many conditions including weather. The other important things you learn are crucial to preventing deaths while driving. This is due to the fact that you are taught the dangers of driving recklessly or too fast and what repercussions those can have. Students are also taught about how to handle dangerous situations like but not limited to hydroplaning and other drivers, that if not handled properly could become fatal quickly. Some steps that can be taken are giving people access to quality drivers education programs in addition to real life driving experience with quality instruction either from a class or a trusted and legal adult. Real world experience is said to be more important than anything you can learn from a book or class. However you can’t always simulate very dangerous situations like near crashes or losing control. This is where the quality instruction in the class room comes in to teach young drivers what to do. Another thing that can be done is buying a car with proper safety features and airbags. Although likely more expensive, newer cars are often safer. If drivers have the option, they should get a car with features like lane departure warning and collision avoidance technology. The size of the car can also be critical in saving your life. A SUV is often larger than a standard sedan which makes it safer due to many factors. These factors include lots of visibility, large mass and subdued speed which makes most SUVs safe and a good choice that can save your life. I don’t personally have experience of being in a car accident myself, but I do have an experience with my dad getting into a bad car accident. This happened as he was on his way home from work and drove through a green light, as someone turned left into his lane going really fast and hit his truck. His drivers side was too badly damaged to exit, so he had to climb out the rear passenger side. Lucky he was being responsible and wearing his seatbelt which saved his life. The impact was so large his glasses were flung into the back window and needed to be located for him to see. Of course the other person was not driving safely and was going through a light they shouldn’t have while going a speed they shouldn’t have. The steps that I can take to be a better driver include driving the speed limit and not trying to rush. In addition I will always check my blind spots and be very aware. I will also share this with my friends to help them stay safe.
