Drivers Education

The importance of driver education is to reduce the number of traffic related accidents and/or deaths every year. Driver education is very important because it provides knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to be a safe diver. Traffic accidents happen far too often because individuals do not understand the importance of being a safe driver. If these young individuals were taught proper safety precautions while on the road these deaths may be preventable. Some steps that could be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving would be to educate individuals on the consequences of poor driving, and advocate for safer driving. An organization I am a part of is called Scrub Club, this club advocates for safe driving and seatbelt safety. In this organization the members stand outside of the school to report on average how many students and faculty wore a seatbelt when arriving at school.  In addition, we, members, had speakers come in to share stories about driving accidents they had been a part of.

A tragic experience I have encountered with a car accident which resulted in three deaths, would have been the car accident my father was involved in. This tragic event occurred when I was only five years old and my dad was getting ready to leave for work. The guy that he rode with to work was running about thirty minutes late picking him up, and that was not like the driver to be late. No one thought anything of it, just that he was having a rough morning. It was not until about eleven thirty at night when my mom heard a loud banging at the door. She was terrified thinking someone was breaking into the house. However, it was my aunt, she came over to tell my mom that my dad had been in a car accident and was being taken to the hospital. Sadly, my dad did not survive the injuries he sustained from being in the car accident. The crash report stated that my dad was ejected from the vehicle and suffered traumatic injuries. There were three other men in the vehicle, including the driver that also suffered injuries from the crash. The two other passengers were also ejected and by the time the EMT’s got to the scene those two men were pronounced dead at the scene. Those two men were my uncles. Whereas, my dad was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The doctors tried everything they could but he was gone, he had lost too much blood. The driver of the vehicle left the accident unharmed but I lost two uncles and my father all because he chose to drink and drive. Growing up without my father wasn’t easy and it came with many challenges that I had to overcome. I had to learn how to cope with my emotions and be nicer to the individuals that were around me. I was very attached to my father and did not want anyone else, therefore, when my mom told me what had happened I took all of my anger out on her. Overtime I have forgotten many memories that I had with my dad and I always wonder what my life would be like if he was still here with me.

Some steps that I can take to be a better driver would be to stay more alert of my surroundings and encourage others to be safer drivers. When I am driving I try to be the most alert I can be and am usually always aware of what is going on around me. I watch other vehicles that are around me and pay attention to the changing road conditions. However, there are some times when I will look away to change the radio or turn on the air conditioning. I will encourage other drivers to be the best they can be by explaining what may happen to them if they do not drive safely. I will teach individuals the importance of roadway safety and seatbelt safety. Nowadays, high schoolers’ tend to drive more carelessly because they haven’t been taught the importance of being safe on the road. I will explain some consequences that come with driving irresponsibly. Some examples of irresponsible driving include drinking and driving, speeding, and so many more. To be a safe driver individuals should check your vehicle for flat tires, or headlight outages before leaving the driveway, be alert at all times, pay attention to the road conditions, and eliminate distractions while driving.
