The importance of Drivers Education

Driver Education Initiative Award – Annual Scholarship Opportunity

Drivers education is the opportunity given to many of the Americans in the United States. However, many people don’t take advantage of this opportunity to gain the knowledge and understanding of the safeties of driving. Due to this, the total number of Americans who die from poor driving in the span of two years is more than the total number of American deaths in the Vietnam War. Driving is now the most dangerous and threatening thing in American society. This all can be changed though if the American society pays more attention to the details and aspects of drivers education.

It should be noted that drivers education is the most important entity to reduce the number of deaths as a result of driving because it educates individuals with the knowledge, attitude, and skills of the many safety concerns when driving. In other words, drivers education teaches individuals how to responsibly operate a vehicle and the safety procedures you have to follow to have safe traveling. When following these procedures, it reduces the number of deaths that occur to Americans because people will know what to do to prevent an accident and know what to do after an accident.

There are many steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths relating to driving. For instance, always keeping your seatbelts on can keep you in place on impact but also is designed to work with airbags. When seatbelts are not being used, the driver or the passengers can collide with the airbag or even smash through the windshield which can result in serious injury or death. Another step that can be taken is no drinking and driving, especially for people underage because there are many effects it can have. Any amount of alcohol can affect the way you concentrate on the road and your reaction time, putting you at risk of a serious accident or even death. Lastly, know your limitations, especially when driving at night. According to the National Highway Administration, people are three times more likely to have a fatal accident at night than during the day. This is because depth perception, color recognition and peripheral vision can be jeopardized in the dark, and the glare of headlights from an oncoming vehicle can temporarily blind a driver.

Personality (Personally), I’ve had an experience of being in a car accident. I was about 12 years old. My family and I were taking a trip to the arcade, when we approached a red light, suddenly, a truck came rolling through the streets and hit about five cars, including ours. This wreck caused my family and numerous others injuries. This may be due to how many people were in the SUV. Because we thought it was a short trip, me and my cousins sat in the cargo space of the SUV without any seatbeats while the rest of my family were up front. This was a bad idea because when we got hit, many of us bumped our heads and it caused a lot of head injuries because of how hard the impact was. This made me realize how important driving safety really is, especially now that I am at the age where I can drive. I recently got my drivers license and while going through the steps and procedure of the drivers education, it taught me that following the steps for safe traveling and having the right attitude when driving can help me prevent an accident.

Following this, I learned the important steps that I can take to be a better and safer driver as well as helping others become safer on the road through drivers education. Specifically, what I learned is to focus on driving, allowing me to be aware of my surroundings and my location. This will help my reaction time when a car is getting really close to me which can result in an accident. Another thing I learned is to go the speed limit because it helps reduce the amount of time it takes for me to react to the changes on the roadway or the flow of traffic which can also make it easier for me to stop my vehicle, if needed. Lastly, I learned to pay attention to the weather, this is because living in Texas can be dangerous when there is ice on the road. Many people aren’t used to the icy roads nor have the equipment or vehicle for them, so when paying attention to the weather, gives you an advantage of how the roads are going to be like.

Overall, paying more attention to drivers’ education can reduce the amount of deaths in the American society. When doing so, it gives people more understanding about the dangers of driving and how to prevent them. It also gives them the knowledge to educate other drivers to become safer on the roads. This is crucial because many people don’t understand the seriousness of safe driving, so when people their age educate them, they can grasp onto the idea of it.
