The Importance Of Driving Responsibly
Learning to drive is an incredibly important part of every teenagers life. It gives them a sense of freedom, a feeling of independence and a gateway into their adulthood. Once they reach a certain age they don’t want to be driven around by their parents anymore, where is the street cred in that? But with this freedom comes risk, as with a lot of things. Learning to drive is great but it’s also dangerous. A whole new level of responsibility must be learned and taken into consideration. We not only need to be aware of what we are doing and how we are driving but also have eyes all around us to focus on what all the other road users are doing too. Not only other drivers but also cyclists and pedestrians who have just as much right to use the roads as drivers do.
I would regard driver education as the most important thing to reducing fatalities due to driving. I believe this to be true because as teens, we are taught the right ways of the road. Driving courses provide ample information enabling us to smoothly transition into the driving world. Howbeit, over the years, some people forget the rules of the road, making it dangerous for not only the new drivers, but also for the regular drivers who have been on the road for a while. Additionally, in order to be a good driver, we must also be taught by a good driver. Thus, parents and adults that take us out on driving lessons are the teachers that are most influential to our success as a responsible driver. The techniques that are taught to us have to be taught by someone who is sensible and follows all the rules of the road, it is no good us being taught bad habits as that is where accidents can happen. The worst habits are first prevented with good teachers and will stop, or at least prevent bad habits from forming into the foreseeable future.
I believe that what steps can be taken are providing a standardised test that all cars must pass at least every two years. This is to prevent dangerously old cars and vehicles from driving on the streets and not falling apart whether it be engine failure, failing suspension, or cars that are physically falling apart. This could also include things such as uncalibrated and overbright LED headlights. Tests like these will enable only safe cars on the road, which would further prevent deaths by driving around with cars, that if crashed into, would protect the driver and passengers the best it can.
Increasing the age of being allowed to start driving should be reconsidered, I feel that drivers start way too young and a lot of teenagers are too immature and don’t necessarily have the common sense to be allowed behind a wheel. Some people of this age don’t take it seriously enough and even treat it as if it were a video game. I feel that 18 would be a more sensible age, as teenagers are graduating from high school. I feel that at this age, most are more mature and they don’t want to learn to drive just to show off to their friends.
I was a passenger in a car accident when I was very young, luckily I don’t remember anything about it.
All the people that I have travelled with are very responsible drivers, however I have witnessed a lot of irresponsible driving and I especially notice it more now that I am driving myself. Even when I am a passenger, I am a whole lot more aware of what other road users are doing and how whoever is driving me is driving.
Steps that I can take to be a better and safer driver are checking and keeping my cars functions up to date. Whether it be replacing the oil, getting a tire change, and replacing the brake pads, a fully functioning car will enable better and safer performance on the road. One way to also help others is by avoiding cars and people on the road that are driving dangerously and weaving in and out of lanes. The less people that are around these wreck less drivers the better because this means that it would prevent other drivers from being hurt or injured by them. Also if possible I could try and make dangerous drivers aware of what they are doing and letting people know if you notice something broken or untoward with their car.
