The Dangers of Driving
Driving easily became a part of our daily lives. We execute it so often that the dangers of driving quickly became a blur. There are a variety of risks on the road such as listening to music, eating, drinking, texting, talking, etc. Because these tasks are basic and commonly used, we tend to ignore its dangers when driving. According to multiple studies, over fifty percent of Americans eat while driving, yet this increases their risk of getting in a car accident by eighty percent. Eating involves both your hands and your sight of vision. By taking your eyes off the road even for a split second, you have drastically increased the chances of getting in an accident. The CDC had reported approximately nine deaths every day due to distracted driving. Because of the number of lives lost, the driver’s education course was created to educate teens about the risks of driving.
The driver’s education course had shown a great decrease in the number of accidents of new drivers. It’s important to teach teenagers the risks that they put themselves and those around them in when getting behind the wheel. It’s helpful for them to build a habit of driving safely when first starting, therefore over time, it’s more of an instinct to follow this pattern. Within the first two years after the release of the driver’s education course, the number of accidents in teen drivers had decreased. These courses showcase real stories and highlight the effects of distracted driving, drunk driving, and many more. It proves that without proper precaution, these stories could happen to them in the future.
There are a variety of ways to reduce the number of deaths in regards to driving. Although it’s common sense, it’s frequently overlooked. Firstly, you should always obey the traffic signs and laws that are set in place. Speed limits are there for a reason yet it’s commonly ignored. The speed limits tend to depend on the condition or location of the road. For instance, in school zones, the speed limit is set to 20 mph. This is to ensure the safety of children and staff getting out of school at a specific time. Secondly, buzzed driving is also a common problem that results in the death of thousands of innocent lives, including children. In 2016, there were over 10,000 deaths reported by the CDC. The best method to avoid this predicament is to not drive while drunk. Knowing the dangers can save lives, including your own. Last but not least, wearing a seatbelt should be prioritized when first stepping into a vehicle. Studies have shown that it decreases the number of deaths and injuries by fifty percent. Seat belts are there for a reason. Wear it!
There were multiple instances where I’ve noticed family and friend’s reckless driving after getting my license. Because of the driver’s education course, I was able to realize the dangers of doing simple tasks while driving. For instance, while my dad was driving, he looked down to take a sip of his coffee. In other words, this is a form of distracted driving. Because I was in the car with him, I was able to warn him of the danger that wouldn’t have even crossed his mind. I’ve noticed that after my driver’s education course, I became more cautious of the road. I get somewhat paranoid so I get rid of any possible distractions such as my phone or listening to music. Because I’m still a new driver, it’s important for me to keep those around me and myself safe when I get in the car. It’s a sense of responsibility that we should all have to ensure our safety.
Many people fall victim to the saying, “It will never happen to me.” When you cannot ensure your safety, anything can happen. It’s important to keep in mind the importance of driving safely and cautiously. Even if you put your phone away, changing the radio or eating in the car will increase the chances of crashing. Drive safely by putting on your seatbelt, be alert of the road at all times, and follow traffic signs. In doing so, you can ensure your safety and those on the road with you as well. You will drastically decrease the chances of getting in an accident. When you’re in the car with a distracted driver, warn them of the possible consequences of their actions. By doing so, you will be able to guarantee your safety and the drivers. Furthermore, educating them will lessen the chances of them repeating the same mistake, making the road a bit safer. Remember to drive safely.
