Vrooming to Improving Our Knowledge On the Roads

Driving is a privilege, a privilege that people didn’t even know is a privilege. Driving is something that can make you feel free, yet anxious and worried at the same time. Drivers having the knowledge of safe driving and knowing the importance of driver’s education is a dream to all people on the road, yet some still seem to miss the boat on recognizing the importance of driving and other people’s lives on the road. You never see an accident coming until it happens, but we always seem to ask ourselves “how could I have prevented this from happening to me” even though sometimes, it’s not our fault.

Acknowledging driver’s education is something that will not only give us peace of mind while we are on the roads, but we are also protecting other innocent drivers from any recklessness that can always come unexpectedly. A driver knowing how to maintain a fair distance at certain speeds, reducing distractions in the car, and even knowing how to act fast in critical situations can save a life, maybe your life, my life, or a friend’s life. Distractions on the roads are crucial and one of the main causes of fatal crashes. Whether it is texting and driving, eating food on your way to work, on the phone with your best friend, jamming out to your favorite song, or having a full call, you can put others and yourself in great danger. Protect yourself and other fellow drivers on the road by reducing those distractions and driving awake and alert. Make sure to have plenty of rest before driving, you don’t want a sleepy driver on the road! Eat before you get in the car, having both hands available is safer than having one hand on the steering wheel and another on a sandwich! Turn your music down so you can concentrate on the road, I’m pretty sure Harry Styles would like you to get to your destination in one piece! Most importantly, make sure you know the rules of the road before driving, we don’t want a hazard on the road.

Having anxiety on the road whether or not I’m driving was caused by an accident that left a scar on me physically, mentally, and emotionally. My freshman year of high school, the year I was serious about basketball, and the year I started receiving offers. I thought the year started great considering my team just won the summer championship, but boy was I wrong. Just as I got settled into a new school and started making new friends and preparing for tryouts, I decided to go to the movies with my family. If I had known that day I and my family’s life was on the line, I would’ve never left. One second we were laughing and cracking jokes and another second, we were in a crash that I never thought I would ever experience in my life. Being stuck in the car, not being able to get out, and hyperventilating, I never truly processed what happened to me at the scene, all I knew was that my life was going downhill from there. After suffering the most injuries and having to process how these injuries could potentially affect my future scared me the most. Having to quit basketball and give up my future basketball career because of a lower back fracture was something that I never imagined I’d ever had to do, but I had to walk away. I had to walk away from my future because of an inexperienced driver. I had to give up something that made me truly happy because of a distracted driver. Now I have permanent scars from that accident that I am sure will never heal, but will only make me a better driver because I wouldn’t want someone to live through my pain.

When I drive, I always make sure I drive in conditions I am comfortable in. If I’m too tired to drive, if I am angry or upset about something, or even if it’s raining outside, I know my limitations and therefore, I know that I would be uncomfortable driving in those situations. You have to have precautions, not just for yourself, but for others on the road. After going through that accident, it took months and almost 4 years for me to feel comfortable driving safely and I didn’t want to rush the driving process because, who knows, panicking over a minor mess up can lead to an accident and cost someone their life and even my own life. I choose to drive safely because I have my life to look forward to. There’s no room for recklessness when it comes to driving because sooner or later, reckless driving can lead to something that will most definitely haunt you for life.
