“Decide wisely because every decision you make has an impact on the course of your life”
“Decide wisely because every decision you make has an impact on the course of your life”, I believe this quote closely ties to driving. When behind the wheel we have the reasonability and choice to make that can affect our lives forever. One bad choice, not thinking responsibly, can change our lives and the lives of others in seconds. I believe that driver education is very important in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving. I think that a lot of young drivers do not see outside their small bubble of life but bringing awareness to the number of deaths could give drivers the wakeup call that they need to be safer on the road.
I think that there are many steps we can take to reduce the number of deaths, these include, getting behind the wheel when you are at your best self, being cautious on the road, having no distractions, and driving with the right people. Getting behind the wheel when you are at your best self means, you should be awake, well rested, sober, and aware when you get behind the wheel of any vehicle. With these characteristics I think that we would have a much safer road. For being cautious on the road, as drivers we need to always be aware of what is going on, and never expect the other drivers to make the correct decision. You always need to have your guard up when driving. Finally, being aware is something that we all need to be when getting behind a vehicle. In a split second something can happen that you need to be aware to react from. We don’t see some vehicles coming and being aware can help us react correctly and safely from an action.
The reason that safe driving has hit close to me was an experience that I had at work. I worked at a camp for individuals with special needs, and my position was caring for four adults with a variety of disabilities. Before our campers arrive, we get a file that has all the information about our campers enclosed. One of my adult campers had a Traumatic Brain Injury, as a result of a car accident. Prior to this accident this individual was a thriving young adult, who had a whole life ahead of them. This accident happened and years later I got the chance to meet this individual. This individual has many gross motor, fine motor, developmental, and speech delays. The camper is not the individual that they were before this accident, now they will require 24/7 care, and help for the rest of their life. This is the effect of what I can imagine is reckless driving, and not being safe behind the wheel of a vehicle. A whole life was changed in the matter of a few seconds, one bad decision, one split second, one moment, and a whole life will never be the same. The guilt that you would carry is on I cannot imagine, and hope that myself and no one I am close with will ever have to experience. Driving is a great responsibility that I think many times young adults do not take seriously.
There are many steps that I can take to be a better and safer driver on the road. When getting in the car I need to be completely focused and have no other distractions. This includes my phone, putting it on “drive” mode and getting no notifications will help me be more focused. Always being aware of the situation at all times will help me be a better driver. I have learned that you cannot rely on the other drivers to make the “right or safe” decision. You as a driver need to aware and able to react to any situation that may arise. Finally, always wearing my seatbelt, and making sure that everyone in your car is safely buckled up. This also included when you are driving children, you need to triple check that they are safely buckled into their car seat I think that using these skills and tips can help me be the best driver that I can be. I also think that these steps will set a good example for others.
What I want people to take away from my essay, is that you have decisions to make, every day we do, so make the right one, make the safe one, make the one where you think outside of yourself.
