Why Driver’s Education Is Important

Substantial amounts of deaths, injuries, and destructions of cars are seen each and every year as a result of automobile accidents. Ironically enough, a majority of these accidents are caused as a result of lack of driver’s safety education. Due to this very reason, it is extremely important that each and every driver, or aspiring to be driver, should inform themselves in safety and the rules of the road.

I currently reside in California, and if you know anything about California, you may know that we don’t have the safest drivers in the country. As a driver myself, countless times I have seen drivers lack to check their blind spot and merge into another car’s lane, almost causing an accident; race across traffic and cut other drivers off only to get to the stoplight at the exact same time, and so on. One of the most influential things that helped me as a driver was taking a driving safety course for my insurance company. This course has helped me to correctly position my mirrors in order to reduce blind spots, determine when it is appropriate to pull out of a street, and overall think through every possible situation. Through acknowledging how reckless drivers can be on the road, it is dire that we as drivers take steps to increase our knowledge on how to improve our driving.

As a result of these accidents that happen on and off the road, a lot of the injuries that occur are life-threatening, or even fatal. Not only should we increase our knowledge about what it means to be a save driver, but we should also be increasingly aware of drivers around us, how they may make unsafe maneuvers, and learn how to react to them. We have to understand that we have a huge responsibility when driving, and to drive simply for the thrill of going fast or dodging inbetween cars can serious put someone’s life at risk. In order to do so, next time you’re driving, I’d like you to take note of how many drivers are being reckless or on their phones, and make a mental reminder not to do the same. Most of these drivers don’t realize that they are causing a lot of harm by multitasking. On the road, there should be no such thing as multi-tasking. It only takes about 1.5 seconds for something to immediately change, so that while you’re on your phone and not paying attention to the road, by the time you look up, you could be on the verge of hitting a car and your brain won’t register what’s going on until its too late. By making the simple change of limiting how much you are on your cellular devices while driving, you can make a drastic change in driving safety, and even reduce the number of deaths on the road.

Now, although we may talk about driver’s safety, you may realize that it’s important, but you haven’t been in a dangerous situation and may decide to slack on remaining safe. That is, until you’ve had someone close to you get in a car crash. You truly never know when someone may swerve out of the way of a pedestrian or obstacle and end up in your lane or your family member’s, whoevers it may be. About a year ago, I had my community group leader get into a fatal car accident, and it changed everyone of his students for life. Even though I myself haven’t been in a car crash, there have been numerous times when I have almost been in one, either in my own car, my parents, or my best friends. I truly want to encourage each and every person that may read this essay that driver’s safety and taking precautions is the best way to remain prepared for the worst on the road.

With this in mind, I want to note that in order to be a better and overall safer driver, you should take a driver’s education safety course. The course that I was recommended to take, while lengthy, truly helped me become a better driver and reduce the temptation to look at my phone whilst driving. I know that if I am able to remain informed and see the daily happenings of the driving of others, that I will be able to remain safe and strive to not drive in the same way that they do. Please take caution and be safe on the road, you never know who’s life may depend on it.
