How To Be A Better Driver 101
There are multiple steps I can take to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road. The first steps are basic but after driving for a long time people can start to neglect them. To be a better driver I can stay focused at all times while being on the road. This involves keeping your eyes on the road at all times and not multitasking while driving. Another way I can be a safer driver is by leaving on time and planning ahead. If someone does not leave on time then it can be tempting to speed in order to get to your destination faster. Speeding can be dangerous and can cause you to make bad decisions on the road, but this problem can easily be fixed by planning ahead and giving yourself extra time. This leads to the next step to go the speed limit. The speed limit is there for a reason and it helps protect you and others. By going the speed limit I am becoming a safer driver and helping those around me. Other cars may be going over the speed limit which can pressure you but it is ok to maintain the speed limit and let others pass you. The next main way to be a safer driver is to watch the weather. Depending on the weather it can change the way you are driving. If the roads are icy you should drive slower than you usually do to avoid your vehicle from sliding. You should be going easy on the brakes and slow down sooner to maintain better control of the car. If it is foggy during the day or night you should have your lights on. Another step that I can take to be a better driver is to look both ways at an intersection even if you are going through a green light. This is very simple but can make a huge difference and stop an accident. There is a possibility that someone could be running through a red light and by checking the intersection you can prepare yourself to stop. Another step that I try to take to be a better driver is to keep my distance between me and the car in front of me. If the car in front of me slams on their breaks I should keep enough distance to where I will have enough time to react and stop. The next thing I can do is make sure I am fully awake and alert when driving. It is unsafe to drive while being sleepy and if I was to get sleepy the best thing to do is pull over and take a nap. I can also look as far forward as I can. This will allow me to be prepared for what is ahead and stop it from catching me off guard. Furthermore, keeping the music at a moderate amount will make me a safer driver as well. Loud music can distract you and cause your senses to be less aware. This leads to picking your music before driving. Messing with the radio station trying to change the song will distract you from driving. Therefore, the best solution is to create a playlist before starting to drive in order to stop you from fiddling with it. To even further stop distractions I should put away my phone completely and out of sight. Getting a notification can cause you to look down and that split second could be the difference in keeping you safe. There are newer phones and cars that allow the phone to be connected to the car. This allows the text messages to be read to you aloud and for you to respond back just by speaking. The best overall way though is to just put your phone away completely if you can. A helpful tip that I try to use to become a safer driver and protect others is to use my parking brake. Parking brakes can prevent your car from rolling down a hill or if you are parked on an incline. Also, if you do not use your parking brake regularly your parking brake can stop working the way it is supposed to. It is very important to remember to always have two hands on the steering wheel. Some people can become comfortable and start driving with one hand. This is not the correct way and by gripping the steering wheel with two hands you will have more control over the car. Lastly, I just keep my cool while driving and try not to get stressed out no matter what. These are all of the steps that I can take in order to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road.
