Driving Safety

Driving is a privilege and not something that should be taken for granted. The safety that comes along with driving is extremely important. Many teenagers and new drivers are excited about driving alone for the first time, I know I was. The excitement of independence and freedom, the power of the car, and feeling cool as you drive out of the driveway all on your own. But, for the most part, one doesn’t stop to think about the safety of what they’re about to do. Most people when they get in the car automatically put on their seat belt which is great but that is not always the case. Sometimes, we forget to and are fortunate enough to realize before getting into an accident. But sometimes, people forget or just don’t bother to put it on and get into an accident. They may even die or get seriously injured. Most of the time their seatbelt would have saved their life. Another thing everyone should do when getting in the car is check all of their mirrors to make sure they’re centered. Checking your mirror while driving can cause an accident which may cause injury or death. Small things such as seatbelts, airbags, and being an alert driver can make the difference between life and death. Knowing how to drive and getting the proper education can help people be safer drivers.

Driving education is a necessary and important thing a person should complete before they drive on their own. It is so important for many reasons but mainly because it helps one drive safely. If more people did their driving education and took it more seriously, I think fewer people would die from or get into accidents each year. I went to Temecula driving school and my instructor was very helpful, she helped me learn a lot about being a safe driver. Driving education won’t stop accidents from happening but it will definitely help people overall to be more cautious when driving. Many teenagers wait until they are eighteen to get their license and skip driving education altogether. This isn’t a bad thing but it means that these young adults are not getting the proper driving education. They still have to pass their driving test but they do not need to study for their permit or take a required driving course. I think everyone should be required to take driving lessons before getting their license, no matter their age. I think driving education and lessons are very important, and should be a top priority when it comes to a new driver getting their license.

There are some steps that people can take to help reduce the number of deaths related to driving. A simple step is putting on your seat belt. If you put on your seat belt every time you get in the car, you are securing your life a lot more than if you didn’t put it on. Buckling up is very important and the more that the message can be spread the better. Another simple step that can help someone be a safer driver, is checking all of your mirrors. If you check all of your mirrors ahead of time it reduces the risk of you having to fix them on the road. If you are already driving it can be dangerous to check your mirrors and try to fix them while driving because they are off-center. Another step someone could take is putting their phone somewhere where they can’t grab it while driving. This one is huge because so many accidents are caused because of texting and driving. Whether it’s a smartphone or a flip phone it’s still a distraction and should be

put away. If you’re going to listen to music then queue the songs ahead of time so that you don’t have to go on your phone while driving.

If you time out the songs with the drive then you should be okay. People get so distracted by their phones and get distracted while driving, which is a very dangerous thing to do. This is the main reason why so many accidents occur from texting and driving. Being off of your phone will help you be a more alert, safe and responsible driver. These few simple things should be or become habits for everyone when they get in the car. If everyone did these things then the risk of driving deaths would be largely reduced.

I have been in a car accident before. My brother was driving. We were on our way to school. We were about three minutes away and were going to be right on time. But, when we stopped to wait for someone to take a turn into a neighborhood, BOOM! With a loud crunch, we were rear-ended! I was looking down at my phone when it happened and I remember the horrible, loud noise. My brother saw him coming through the rearview mirror but couldn’t do anything to get out of the way. We then pulled over and got out of the car to talk to the stranger who just hit us. The first thing the driver asked was if we were okay. This made me feel better and more relaxed. We were fine thankfully and the damage was not too bad. Our trailer hitch put a hole in his plastic bumper and his car put a little dent in our truck’s metal bumper. My brother’s truck still ran but there was a little bit of muffler damage, and we ended up filing a claim. The other driver made a common mistake. He was looking down at his phone texting while he crossed the intersection and didn’t look up to see our car. Texting while driving is a very common and dangerous habit in our country. This accident is a good example of this and how it is a very current problem today.

I myself can take a few steps to be a better and safer driver. I am also guilty of going on my phone while driving. Whether it’s changing the song or texting. I sometimes go on my phone. I am working on trying to break this dangerous habit. I also tend to eat a lot when I drive before work or school, but this can also be dangerous. Only having one hand free is not the best way to drive. I am working on giving myself more time to eat before I leave so that I do not do this anymore because I don’t want to end up crashing over eating something. I think by doing these things I will become a better and safer driver. A step that I can take is to share with others, such as my friends or family, and tell them about the accident I was in so that they realize they should be more careful and alert while driving by staying off of their phones. There are many steps one can take to be a better safe driver. More people need to take these steps to overall reduce the death rate caused by driving accidents.
