The Importance of Driver’s Education

Driver’s education is one of the most important aspects when it comes to driving. When first learning how to drive, it is important to understand the rules of the road as well as what all the signs mean. It is not just as simple as red means stop, green means go, and yellow means slow down as people are taught as a kid. It is also not just moving one’s wheel back and forth. Driving is a lot harder than it looks. It is for this reason that knowing how to drive correctly is important.

While the number of deaths in accidents will never top the deaths in World War II and The Civil War, there are many wars that have fewer fatalities than car accidents. While this may be unbelievable, statistics prove this very well. Involving one in driver’s education could change this for the better. As mentioned in the introduction, driving is not as easy as one may believe. Driving involves a car that is thousands of pounds. Therefore this vehicle can be deadly if used in the wrong way. Though, if one goes through a driver’s education course they will be able to learn the rules of the road as well as all the rights and wrongs when driving. Many places provide this service as a way to help new drivers get acquainted behind the wheel. By taking these courses and understanding what to do and what not to do when behind the wheel, accidents could be more preventable. While some people choose not to take advantage of these opportunities, many others may not realize that these are provided to them. If more people see that they are available, they may take advantage of them. For this reason, fewer accidents may happen if people understand the skills needed for better driving.

There are many steps that could be taken to reduce the number of deaths that are related to driving. As stated in the first paragraph, driver’s education can help this. By deciding to educate oneself a person should be able to tell the difference between right and wrong better. This is beneficial due to the fact that knowing what to do can help to prevent stupidity. Another step that can be taken is to be a defensive driver. For example, a turn signal is important, but one can not always trust one. Someone may have forgotten to turn it off or accidentally hit it. It is for this reason that one should always be cautious and check that a person is actually making the turn before going in front of them. This also relates back to driver’s education because the topic of defensive driving is covered quite a bit. Another step that can be taken is preventing drunk people from driving. If one knows that their friend or family member may have been drinking, they should take the keys and drive that person home. It does not matter if that person has had a lot or not. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Also, one should be responsible enough to understand that they should not drive when under the influence of any amount of alcohol. One should always make sure there is a designated driver so everyone can get home safe and prevent an accident. There are many other steps that can be taken to prevent accidents, but these stick out the most.

I was in a very minor car accident on April 20 of 2021. While it was minor, it was still scary. My mother and I were driving home from getting my vaccine when we were at an intersection. How the intersection in this particular location works is that there is the ability to straight, these people have the right of way, the ability to turn onto the other road, or the ability to turn onto the straight road from the other road. We were going straight when someone decided to turn out while we were passing the intersection. My mom moved the car over and honked and the lady still proceeded to hit her. There was somewhat damage to the car but luckily not too much. I believe that people need to understand the ideas of right of ways and be in less of a hurry. This accident could have easily been prevented if she had taken more time to make the decision of what to do.

There are many things you can do to be a safer driver as well. Driver’s education is the most important. I know I have mentioned this in multiple other paragraphs, but it is true. It will help new drivers and any other drivers to get better acquainted with the rules of the road. For example, I took a thirty hour online driving course before taking my driver’s test. It had me take a test after every section and a large one at the end. It helped me to learn the rules and how to stay safe as well as keep others safe while driving. Another way to become a safer driver is to just pay attention to the road. Distractions are just going to cause more hardships for you as the driver. Reducing distractions will make you a safer driver because you will be able to focus on the task ahead, a task that could possibly turn dangerous.

Overall, driver education is very important in reducing deaths as a result of driving. It is very important to understand that driving is a privilege and not a right. Before even getting behind the wheel, one must understand that a car can be a weapon and a very dangerous one. It has the ability to kill a person on impact. It is for this reason that one must be educated to be able to be a safe driver. The one thing I hope anyone takes away from this essay is to be careful when behind the wheel and to educate others on how to be a safe driver.
