The Importance of Driver Education
Driver education is one of the most important parts of getting your driver’s license. Many teenagers must take an online course or sit in a classroom for a certain number of hours to obtain their license. While this may sound tedious, the importance of driver education cannot be stressed enough. Car accidents are one of the leading causes of death for teenagers in the U.S. What makes this worse, is these teens should have just taken these long courses teaching them how to drive safe. Knowing how to drive safe should be fresh on their minds. While these unfortunate accidents still happen, there would be countless more if driver education were not required. One solution to reducing the number of deaths in car accidents would be to increase the difficulty of the driver education courses. This would keep students engaged as they are challenged, but it would also make sure young drivers would be more qualified to operate vehicles.
Another solution to reduce the number of deaths on the road would be to install more speedometers on major highways. The government could add speedometers on toll roads and have small fines for speeding as cars drive through toll booths. This would reduce the amount of speeding on large roads and make driving safer by keeping every vehicle at the speed limit. A third solution has to do with the technological advances the car industry has undergone recently. It could be beneficial to implement a speed limit inside newer cars. With this, the cars themselves would not allow drivers to drive over the speed limit on the road they are driving on. This way, it would be impossible to drive over the speed limit because the car would not drive over it.
Personally, I have never been involved in a major accident, so I consider myself lucky in that regard. However, it is sad to see the average person gets into four or more car accidents in their lifetime. There is no reason to accept that this is okay. At some point, people’s safety stopped being a top priority for many drivers. Several of my close friends drive much too fast on highways because they like the feeling of driving fast. It concerns me how fast they drive because I know how quickly the “fun” feeling of going fast can change to a scary feeling of being out of control and in a dangerous position. I am also extremely worried about how normal it has become to text and drive. The obsession with always needing to respond quickly to a message has made the roads much more dangerous. These firsthand experiences have really made me want to be a safe and focused driver because I never know how distracted or reckless the drivers around me are. If the people close to me think it is okay to drive irresponsibly, there is no telling how many other people think this way. I am very thankful to have avoided major accidents thus far, but I am also worried about the everyday dangers of driving on roads that should not be this dangerous.
Some steps I can take to be a safer driver would be to keep my phone in a safe place out of sight while I am driving to remove any temptation I might have. I could also work on being a more alert driver and look out for anyone who may be driving recklessly or anyone who might be distracted or intoxicated. Getting more practice driving will help me be a better and safer driver and I believe I will grow to be an even better driver as time passes and I get more practice. Some things I could do to help others be safer drivers would be to keep driving safe and continue to be a good influence. With more support I could work to make safe driving cool and popular which will make more people want to drive safe. It is so important to keep influencing other people to drive safer because the future of driving is at stake. If we continue to let driving get more dangerous, there is nothing to stop it from getting worse in the future. As technology advances, we need to advance too and stay sharp on the road. We cannot afford to keep driving dangerously or letting others around us drive dangerously. It is up to each of us to make driving safer for the present and the future.
