Drivers education is a program that is offered but not required for anyone who is going to get their driver’s license, it is a course that provides the proper education and techniques to safely operate a vehicle and allows drivers to learn about the steps that need to be taken in situations that will occur on the road while driving. Studies show that young drivers who haven’t taken a driver’s education are 75 percent more likely to get a traffic ticket, 24 percent more likely to be involved in a fatal or injury accident, and 16 percent more likely to have an accident. These studies show how dramatically taking a driver’s education course can affect how you drive and what happens to someone with a driver’s education course taken compared to someone without the course taken. This course is important to take because it is proven to keep drivers safer on roads and decrease the chance of fatal incidents occurring while operating a vehicle. Many steps can be taken to reduce the total number of deaths related to driving. One step that can be taken is to stay off of your phone while driving, there are about 400 fatal crashes that occur every year related to one being on a phone while operating a motor vehicle according to the NHTSA. When you are driving a vehicle your undivided attention should be on the road and what is going on around you, once you get on your phone while driving you can no longer give your full attention to the road making you more likely to make a mistake on the road and possibly crash or get seriously injured. Being on your phone is not the only way you can be distracted while driving, you should not be eating while you are operating a motor vehicle, nor should you be fully engaging with someone or something that is not on the road in front of you. Another step that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving is to obey and follow traffic laws in place on the roads you are navigating. There are countless deaths every year because someone ran a red light or a stop sign and collided with another vehicle, or someone going over the speed limit and fatally struck another vehicle. These road laws are in place for a reason, they are there to protect every driver on the road so when someone disobeys them it can lead to fatality. Another step that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving is to drive defensively and predictable. This means always watching out for other drivers on the road and being ready for the worst while driving, this also means making sure to use your signal when it is called for and taking proper measures to ensure your vehicle is road-ready every time you get into it and begin to drive. While there are more steps that can be taken to ensure safety and decrease the risk of fatality while driving the final one I will elaborate on is to never no matter the circumstances drive while under the influence of any drugs or alcohol. There are over 10,000 deaths related to driving while under the influence every year, if you are under the influence and need to get somewhere ask a sober friend to drive you, or get a pickup service that can take you where you need to go but never drive while intoxicated. I have had experiences where I was in the car with a friend or a relative and they were driving irresponsible, if one is ever in this situation you should ask the person to drive properly and if they refuse ask them to drop you off at a close safe location and then ask someone you know to come to pick you up, being with someone driving irresponsible is never worth risking your safety. You can follow all the steps mentioned above to assure that you are safe while operating a motor vehicle, Do not text and drive or engage in any other distractions while operating a motor vehicle, do not disobey traffic laws put in place on roads to ensure drivers safety, you should drive predictable and defensively this will make sure you are not caught off guard by any situation you might face on the road, and finally, no matter what do not drive under the influence in any circumstances this is only asking for a problem so just find a ride and play it safe.
