The Importance of Learning Safe Driving

Children often learn of the importance of drug addiction during schools as it is a major cause of death and incarceration in the United States. However, we do not teach safe driving nearly as much despite automobile incidents being another major cause of death in the United States. Most students have their safe driving lesson while they are in driving school before getting their permit. It is vitally important that we tech more about driver safety in our education to reduce the number of deaths in automobile accidents, and that we recognize the importance of driver safety education in reducing the number of deaths involving car incidents.

Through educating children and teenagers at a young age about car safety we can better ensure that when people become eligible to drive, they will know how to drive safely. This would ensure that one of the most ubiquitous ways that people achieve transportation happens safely. One of the most important aspects of car accidents is notably that they are preventable, this means that with proper education we can reduce the number of deaths caused by car incidents. Imagine how many lives could be saved if we had proper and diligent teaching over safe driving practices and crash prevention. This makes proper education over crash prevention of upmost priority because of the number of lives that can be saved and how often people use cars as transportation. As nearly every household uses an automobile of some kind for transportation either to school, work, or to run errands learning proper road safety becomes significantly more important. Because of the simple fact that cars are used so often and are so ubiquitous in our society proper education over road safety becomes vital to saving thousands of lives every year.

Proper driving safety is a key aspect of keeping people alive while driving. A car incident could happen at any time and anywhere and most are highly preventable with the only major exceptions being ones involving weather. However, this still leads to most accidents being avoidable through safe driving practices. An education in what safe and unsafe driving look like would allow for students to know before getting their permit or license how best to avoid accidents. A major portion of driving skills come from experience but one part that shouldn’t is the ability and ways to avoid getting into vehicular accidents. When people know what safe driving looks like they know not only what to do but also equally important what not to do when driving. Most of my driving skills have been cultivated through driving for almost a year but the one aspect that I understood before I got my permit is the importance of safe driving. I am lucky enough to have understood this before starting to drive. This has caused me to safely drive when driving towards the store, school, work, and everywhere I go. All this because I had an early lesson in the importance of driver safety.

Unfortunately, the lesson in driver safety I received however was not a pleasant one. This is because that lesson came in the form of my cousin’s death in a car accident. The driver was impaired and ineligible to drive, they made an illegal turn and the car coming the other direction hit them. Because my cousin wasn’t wearing her seatbelt, she flew over 50 feet in the air and hit the ground. She then died one week later in the hospital after that I refused to enter a car for two weeks after I got home from the funeral. Every time I drive, I remember what can happen if I’m not careful and every time I drive or even if I’m not the one driving, I insist on everyone wearing seatbelts because I do not want a repeat of what happened with my cousin. When attempting to drive after the funeral the moment I sat in the driver seat flashes of the funeral came to me. This permanent imprint on me in the form of her death has led to me being a safe driver. Despite this being hands down the worst two weeks of my life I came out of it changed, once optimistic about driving I now dreaded it. After I overcame this fear, I was able to drive safely with full knowledge of what could happen if I wasn’t careful. Suddenly I was fully aware of the consequences unlike most people when driving I am fully aware of what could happen if the driver is unsafe. This is all because of my experience two years ago with my cousin’s preventable death.

Lessons in driver safety are imperative for people learning how to drive and she be more common than just a quick segment in drivers ed. This is because of the amount of people who die every year from an accident involving cars, and how common driving is in our modern society. All these reasons and more are why we should strive to achieve a better grasp on driver education to prevent hundreds of thousands of deaths every year.
