Educated for a life on the road
All our lives we are taught not “to be so defensive” however when it comes to operating a 3000lb symbol of independence wrapped in metal, plastic, combustible liquid and technology…being defensive can save our lives and protect others. Many drivers education courses including defense driving as a top skill.
Learning how to drive defensively is one of the major tennant’s of drivers education courses. Defensive driving teaches us to be aware and anticipate the actions of others. Learning to drive guides us in best practices when we are merging onto a fast moving interstate or keeping our distance from other motorists. Defensive driving keeps us on our toes and he’s us react more quickly to the ever changing conditions on the road
New and inexperienced drivers account for an extremely high rate of motor vehicle crashes. A well rounded drivers ed class instills confidence and sharpens our reaction times. Learning the rules of the road teaches us to identify and obey traffic laws.
A well rounded drivers education course is an essential aspect learning and improving our driving skills.
There are three important steps that can be taken to prevent the staggering number of deaths in the roads. First, do not drive while impaired. Drinking or use of mind altering substances weakens our reaction time and contributes to a high risk of fatal accidents. Second be sure the vehicle is properly maintained. Damage to the drivetrain, safety features, brakes and tires can prevent the vehicle from operating properly and lead to severe accidents causing injury or death. Finally, pay attention. Distracted driving is the cause of more and more fatal accidents. Put down the phone, do not text and drive, do not read while driving keep an eye on the road and make sure you are alert and mentally healthy awake and aware of your surroundings.
Remain calm while driving. Everyone wants to get to their destinations safely and they n time. Drivers need not let their emotions get the best of them. Road rage is a phenomenom that is contributing more and more to accidents and injuries behind the wheel. Being a courteous driver is being a safe driver. Working to keep anger and aggregation in check will go a long way to keeping oneself and others safe.
Steps I take to become a better driver is to continue practicing driving in various road conditions. Being well rested and alert on the roads is critical. If it’s late or I’ve been driving a long time I’ll always pull over and rest if I’m feeling even the slightest bit drowsy or weary. Another way I’m committed to being a safe driver is I intend to be mindful and courteous to other drivers. Road to rage is becoming more of a concern on American streets and I am committed to respecting the privilege of driving on our roads. I stay mindful of road conditions and how the weather affects roads during wet or freezing road conditions. I increase my stopping distance between cars. I slow down and maintain focus on the road. I’ll alter my plans and opt to stay home when road ways are tricky. I’m also committed to keeping my vehicle maintained and by conducting regular inspections of my car. I keep up to date on safety recalls and complete repairs in a timely manner. It is also important to follow local laws regarding registration and insurance laws. Many states have different laws and protecting yourself from loss or liability is important.
When I was growing up my uncle was killed instantly while riding his motorcycle on a winding mountain road in Eastern New Jersey. The entire family was out that day enjoying the drive. Suddenly a woman who was impaired by alcohol crossed the center line and hit my uncle head on. My other uncle raced to his side but there was nothing that could be done. Watching my family grieve the loss of my Uncle Rick taught me that there is no “safe” amount of alcohol that can be consumed when a person’s loved ones are involved. I also learned that tragedy can strike in an instant and some vehicles are more risky then others. While I understand that people are passionate about riding motorcycles they need to be operated with great care. Further education on awareness of motorcycles in the road will go a long way in preventing accidents that cause injury or death. In the meantime I while I enjoy my car and driving, I am committed to being as safe as I can.
