The Importance of Driver Safety

Driving is a part of a lot of people’s everyday lives. They drive to school, work, the store, etc. It has become such an ordinary thing that most do not think twice about the dangers of operating a car when they are a passenger or when they are the ones driving. Someone could be changing a song on the radio and end up hitting a pedestrian that they did not see, or someone could be driving while very tired and crash their car if they accidentally fell asleep. So many negative consequences could occur as a result of not being a safe driver. This is especially true for newer drivers. They do not have a ton of experience driving and therefore are more at risk of putting themselves in harm’s way. However, there are many ways to become a better and safer driver. One way that applies mainly to newer drivers is taking driver’s education. This is a way to learn all the important things about how to drive and how to be protected while doing it. Driving can be hazardous, but it also can be a fun and useful form of transportation if you are being cautious.

The goal as a driver is to get to your desired destination. This is not always an easy task, however. You are navigating a big, fast metal object that weighs on average around 4,000 pounds. While navigating a car, you are also on the road with people doing the same thing. This can become a recipe for disaster if one does not proceed with caution. Driver safety is an essential thing to put into practice. So many people die while driving, and a lot of these deaths could likely have been prevented. One of the most important rules is to always wear a seatbelt. Aggressive movement during a car crash can cause injury or even death; wearing a seatbelt makes this less likely to happen. Another important rule is to not become distracted while driving. Some examples of this are making a playlist so you don’t have to keep going on your phone to pick a new song and waiting until you are parked to answer your messages. I also would recommend driving at the speed limit, at most driving 5 miles per hour above the speed limit. The faster you are driving, the worst the collision will be if you get into a car crash. Lastly, always make sure to observe your surroundings; there are lots of things that you need to be aware of while driving. Watch out for a child running into the road or a branch that has fallen. There are many more things to keep in mind while traveling on the road, but these are some of the most crucial ones. In addition to educating yourself about driver safety, it is also important to educate your friends and family. If you are driving with someone and they start doing something unsafe, like doing their makeup while driving instead of putting all their attention into watching the road, do not just sit there, tell them what they are doing wrong. It is better to speak up and prevent a future accident instead of standing by, putting you and the person who is driving in potential danger. 

New drivers are more at risk of getting into an accident than people who have been driving for a while. This is because new drivers are less experienced and therefore are not as skilled. Not being as skilled is significant when it comes to driving because the more mistakes you make, the more likely you are to be in a dangerous situation. Thankfully there is something out there for the exact purpose of teaching new drivers how to be safe on the road: driver’s education. Driver’s education is a program that prepares people for getting their learner’s permit and/or driver’s license. The program teaches people how to drive, the rules of the road, and other important things. You also get the chance to have one-on-one driving time with an instructor. They will direct you from the passenger where to go and you will be the one driving the vehicle. I took driver’s education, and I think that it helped me become a much better driver. The instructors are professionals and therefore know everything you will need to know, versus your friends and family who might only know the basic rules of driving. You get the chance to learn important information that the average driver may not know. This can help a lot in preventing possible dangerous incidents. For example, I learned the specific way to hold a steering wheel so I would be less likely the get injured if I got into an accident and the airbag went off. Something like this may seem little, but when it comes to something as dangerous as driving, anything extra you can do to be safer matters; it can prevent injury and even death. There are so many deaths caused by improper driving. Due to this, driver’s education can teach people how to be better drivers, and therefore help reduce the number of deaths caused by improper driving.

A lot of people drive every day as part of their daily routine. Driving a car, whether you are a passenger or the one driving, has become so commonplace that most people forget how hazardous it can be. Being a negligent driver can have so many negative consequences. New drivers are especially at risk of this. As new drivers, they are more likely to put themselves in danger because of their lack of experience. The good news is that it is possible to improve your driving skills and safety in several ways. Driver’s education is one of these methods, mainly applicable to newer drivers. Learning all that is important about driving and being safe at the same time is what this course is all about. Driving has many opportunities to become dangerous, but as long as you are careful, it can also be a great way to get around.
