Reducing Driver Related Deaths
The number of deaths that occur on America roadways are and have been at record high numbers. The rate of fatalities on roadways being greater than those in fighting in war is mindblowing since essentially a main aspect of combat is to take the lives of others in order to better your country. Change needs to be enacted since driving is an activity that the majority of Americans take part in each and every day. A way to decrease the death toll is to properly educate all drivers. The reason for many accidents are drivers not knowing the accurate rules of the road. For example one might not know who has the right way when it comes to taking a left turn across a high trafficked roadway. If the driver is confused and feels like others should stop for them that can cause serious danger to those involved. Driver education is immensely important to reduce the number of driving related deaths with having more informed drivers. The roadways will be not only safer but also less deranged. Besides informong drivers of the rules and regulations of the road another step that can be taken to reduce deaths is limiting the use of cellphones while driving. It is estimated that 23% of car accidents involve some sort of cell phone usage. To reduce cell phone usage cell phones can be required and automatically placed in drive mode when detected to be in a car. In drive mode you will not be allowed to text along with any other aspect on your phone. The only thing allowed will be calling to a list of emergency contacts that should only be used when an emergency takes place. Another step that can be inadvertently taken is requiring the driver to pass a breathalyzer before the car will start. About 32 drivers in the United States die each day due to drivers under the influence of alcohol according to the CDC. Requiring drivers to prove their soberness in order to drive will help others to feel safer while driving and help the number of deaths be reduced. I personally have never experienced an extreme car accident but I have been in an accident that was just a rear ending. Personally for me that was scary enough so I can’t even imagine those that are extreme and fatal. My family members have also been a part of a couple of accidents but nothing too serious. Even those that are minor still cause panic and fear amongst those involved and their loved ones. Just driving by an extreme accident or seeing pictures of the damage done in accidents sends chills up my spine. Car accidents are one of the scariest things due to the amount of time one spends in a car. I have personally seen my friends or family drive irresponsible which causes terror and dread to those who they love and especially those in the car. It is not a good feeling to have to worry about those who are a big part of your lifes safety each and every day because of their bad driving habits along with the other drivers on the roads. Steps that I can personally partake in to become a better driver is to limit my distractions by putting my phone on do not disturb and out of sight, making sure I am aware of my surroundings on the roadway at all times, and knowing each and every rule of the road. I can help others to become safe drivers by informing them on the number of deaths that occur on American roadways along with the statistics compared to combat. Along with taking initiative to change the amount of phone usage while driving and eliminating a way to stop drunk drivers since these two incidents are the cause for many driving related deaths along with injuries. I can also call for more driver education classes that require the learners attention at all times of the course. Along with informing the drivers or new to be drivers that their actions on the road can have very intense outcomes from just one tiny movement of fault, Overall there are ways to reduce that number of deaths on roadways and allow for drivers to feel safe driving and not fear for their lives every time they get behind the wheel. Driving related deaths is truly a significant problem and will only continue to get worse as the days and years pass. These issues need to be acted on rather than later to keep the people safe and comfortable driving.
