Safe Driving Now, Lives Saved For Later

We have all been told several times throughout our lives how important it is to wear your seatbelt and to never speed. Companies have even gone as far as to put up billboards and speed monitors to further stress the importance of “buckling up” and “slowing down” while driving anywhere. However some choose to be hardheaded, resulting in their ultimate fate. When you travel along roads, especially that of the highway, you see burnt out tire marks, destroyed tires, and car pieces from all over. This is why Driver Education is so important.

Driver’s Education is the act of learning to properly operate a vehicle on roads through hour courses. In turn, you receive a license verification proving that you completed the driver’s course, and can in fact drive. Since Driver’s Education educates you on how to drive, you also learn the do’s and don’ts when it comes to driving safely. Drivers learn to anticipate what those driving around them will do and use this knowledge to avoid dangerous accidents. This additional education on top of what you already know can make you think before doing certain things behind the wheel. Driver’s Education can therefore reduce the number of deaths as a result of driving by preparing our drivers through hour courses and tests.

Although some high schools offer Driver’s Education classes as early as students sophomore year, many students don’t take this course and rather learn from their parents or relatives on how to drive. This can’t entirely be prevented as parents will always be teaching their children, but this increases the likelihood of car accidents. If Driver’s Education classes were more enforced by schools as a requirement, this could be the first step to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. The speed limit should be lowered to 60-65 on highways as well as 55 in other areas as a second step. Paying attention to all surroundings and letting every second count is the third and final step.

When I was living in Florida, I seen several accidents. Some on narrow roads, and most on freeways. The news was constantly covering these tragedies encouraging people to drive safer. The most common cases I have heard about were those under the influence of alcohol or drugs. When behind the wheel with said things in your system, not only are they putting themselves in danger but also those around them who have nothing to do with the situation. It’s sad how many cases of wrong place at the wrong time that there are. Growing up, I sat in the truck with my siblings as a relative was driving while drunk. He swerved several times and almost caused an accident on a main road in his pickup truck. I watched some of those who are supposed to be wiser drive the way they wanted instead of that of the laws. Some even left their seatbelts off and sped on to their destinations while blasting their music. Those with licenses have even drove with one hand and one hand only. In all those situations, someone as well as ourselves could’ve got hurt or killed because of the way our driver was behaving.

In order to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road, I first need to take one of the Driver’s Education courses offered here in South Georgia. This will better my understanding of cars and how the controls operate. Learning the basic traffic laws and punishments would be my second action as I can’t just know how to drive the vehicle, I also would need to know the information needed to be on the road. Once I have taken those two steps, I can then take them into action by 1. Get a licensed vehicle with car insurance. 2. Having a driver’s license. 3. Putting my seatbelt on. 4. Driving safely. After a few trials and tribulations, I will get the complete hang of driving and will be able to help someone else. I will need to learn what they know about driving and use that to get a better understanding of where they are in that area. After this, I would strongly recommend the Driver’s Education place I attended and got licensed at to help them too get licensed. After this process, I will use hands on mentions to further teach that person how to drive safely on a not so busy road to a very busy highway. After they have mastered driving they can further use this information to teach someone else allowing the cycle to repeat itself.
