Safe driving safes

Getting your driver’s license is a right of passage that every 16 year old looks forward to. In the haste and excitement of their new found freedom some people don’t think of the responsibility of driving and instead only see the excitement of their new experience. I can attest that I was too swept up the all of the joy of being a driver and in turn drove slightly recklessly during my first year of owning a license. I feel that as a nation we would be able to create a system that promotes safe driving and helps to reduce the amount of lives lost behind the wheel.

During my first year of being a driver I had many close calls but a friend of mine was in an actual accident. My friend was headed to school while the sky was still dark. Many of the street lights were dim and she was speeding by because she was late. My friend was waiting at an intersection for the light to turn green while also being in her phone. She heard a car honk behind her and thought the light changed to green. She quickly pressed her foot to the gas and at the same time she pulled into the intersection a truck was also crossing and my friend ended up under the truck. Her car was totaled but luckily she was safe and alive. My friend helped me to become a more safe and aware driver. The entire day I was so scared and worried about her. I somehow felt that it was my fault because I typically ride to school with her and if I was in the car then the entire situation would have never happened. After that day I vowed to be a safer driver. I never wanted anyone to blame themselves because of my reckless driving and I never wanted to be the cause of anyone’s death or injury.

I feel that there can be certain steps taken in order to reduce the amount of drivers injured behind the wheels. Currently in order to do so we have Joshua’s law. I think that this program is necessary but it is not doing what it takes to stop reckless driving. I think that in order to get your license a person must go through a car accident simulation. One in which they will die and have to see their families emotions. The car accident simulation will be a way for people to wake up and become more cautious while driving because now they realize even when they are in the car alone they are not only driving for themselves but for their family members and others on the street as well. There are some steps that I have taken personally though in order to improve my driving. I use my gpa most places in order to always be aware of the speed limit. I haunt at an intersection when the light first turns green in order to ensure no one is still coming. Last, I make sure all my mirrors and everything are correct before I leave my parking spot in order to ensure that nothing needs to be rearranged or changed during my drive so that I am able to have maximum focus. I try my best to be a good driver because I know that I am driving for everyone on the road and not only for myself. I understand that a car is a dangerous vehicle that could harm or even terminate another person especially in an accident. Cars are machines that people need to be more aware of. I don’t think that people are aware that each time they get behind the wheel that they are putting not only their lives but also the lives of others at risk just by the way they drive their car.

In conclusion, getting a driver’s education is very important. I feel that people forget how important it is to be a safe driver and if they get an updated drivers education every time they get their license renewed then the streets would be much safer. As a person it is easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing around you so by having the driver’s education it could be a way for people to realize that they are responsible for the lives of the people around them. Driving is fun but you should also feel safe each time you get onto the open road.
