Embracing the Road to Safety

x

In a small suburban town, my brother, Angel, was known for his love of streetcar racing. He described that his passion stemmed from the thrill of speed and the adrenaline that coursed through his body as he drifted through winding roads with confidence. However, one fateful night, his pursuit nearly cost him his life.

It was a warm summer night when the phone rang unexpectedly. As I answered the phone, I listened to my mother desperately trying to gasp for air and form a clear sentence.

“Your brother. Angel. He’s been in an accident.” She managed to convey.

Time stood still as the words replayed in my mind. My vision became blurry as a sudden stream of tears consumed me.

Rushing to the hospital, I found my mother lying weak. No words needed to be said; I could feel the jabbing pain she had been suffering through her swollen eyes. Attempting to embrace her with my warm body, I knew that nothing could ease her heavy heart.

Fortunately, my brother survived the accident, but he was far from being intact. His body was similar to a canvas, displaying the marks of his violent crash. He suffered from broken bones, internal injuries, and a back injury that would remind him of this dreadful situation. He described the guilt he had felt, knowing that his careless decisions had caused his family immense pain.

This disastrous experience opened my eyes to the importance of driving education. Driving education serves as a pivotal step towards reducing the number of deaths resulting from driving. By providing experienced and future drivers with comprehensive knowledge and training, it provides them with the fundamental skills to effectively navigate through complex traffic situations. It teaches more than simply learning the rules of the road; instead, it emphasizes defensive driving techniques, hazard perception, and the significance of situational awareness. A well-rounded driver education program can transform individuals into responsible decision-making drivers.

In addition, driver education discusses the pressing issue of reckless driving behavior, such as distracted driving, speeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. By promoting driving awareness, we can shed light on the devastating consequences of poor driving and limit the number of suffering victims.

With that, there are several steps that can be followed to reduce the number of deaths caused by driving. For instance, the creation of driver education programs. By implementing comprehensive driver education programs, we can ensure that a larger population gains proper awareness. These programs can include both theoretical and practical components, highlighting real-life scenarios to help drivers develop critical decision-making skills in life-threatening situations. Workplaces, schools, and community clubs can easily host these programs. Another step is embracing technology. As our technology advances, so can our chances of public safety. By using automatic emergency braking systems, lane departure warnings and ignition interlock devices, we can foster an additional layer of protection and safety on the roads.

As for the steps that I and others can take to promote better and safer driving, one is engaging in self-reflection. It is important to reflect on your driving habits so that you acknowledge any areas that may need improvement. Identifying personal weaknesses and making an effort to change your patterns can help you become a better driver, which can decrease the chances of injury to you and those around you. Secondly, you can commit to distraction-free driving. Phone usage, adjusting car settings, or participating in other distracting activities can wait to be done when the car is stationary. It may take only a second to do these things; however, they can have lifelong consequences that are not worth it. Thirdly, by embracing defensive driving techniques such as keeping a safe distance between you and the car in front, anticipating potential hazards, and being mindful of your blind spots, you can minimize the risk of accidents. These are simple reminders that are taught when you first learn to drive, but they are tips that you should carry with you for your entire driving career. Last but not least, encouraging responsible driving. If you notice that your friends or family members are driving recklessly, it is important that you make them aware of their actions. It is better to point out their wrongdoings early rather than wait until it is too late.

My brother’s accident serves as a reminder of the importance of putting an end to reckless driving. By emphasizing responsible driving behavior and promoting awareness, we ensure that no more tears are shed over preventable accidents.
