New Drivers ed

Teenagers
are involved in more car accidents than any other age bracket.
According to the law offices of Andrew Meyers, teens are involved in
over 380,000 injury-sustaining accidents each year. One way that this
number can be reduced substantially is through an improved driver’s
education system.

To
reduce accidents, drivers ed should be changed to provide
support not only before someone obtains their license, but also
during their initial time carrying a license. Instead of simply
having teenagers complete one course before they get their leaners’
permit, they would be enrolled in drivers ed consistently
throughout their first year of having their license. In this model,
after getting their license teens would attend drivers’ education
classes regularly. These classes would cover topics that they will be
exposed to as they become more experienced such as overconfidence on
the road. To illustrate how this might work, students would be taught
the basic skills and be required to complete a certain number of
hours before earning their license. Once they earned their license,
they would continue to attend classes once per month. These classes
would cover the advanced aspects of driving, such as driving on
freeways, driving with friends, avoiding road rage and, as mentioned
above, overconfidence on the road. If one thinks about it logically,
most skills are mastered with just one class at the beginning, so
driving should be approached in the same way For a variety of
reasons, I do not have a driver’s license, so I have never operated
a vehicle in an accident on the road. I was, however, driving a car
involved in a minor crash in a parking lot while being taught to
drive by a family member. However, the only damage sustained was a
flat tire. Even so, I felt very guilty about it and tried to think of
what I could do right the next time. The only time I know if a family
member being in an accident was when a car a family member was
driving scraped a post in a parking structure. Thankfully, no one was
hurt, and the car was not significantly damaged. As mentioned, I do
not currently drive and currently have a learner’s permit. As such
the most crucial step for me to become a good driver is to continue
practicing both with instructors and experienced drivers until I earn
my license. One of the most important things I or anyone could do to
help others drive safer is to not distract them. This is why it is
important to teach people how to drive with others in the car. Many
people, particularly young drivers drive with their friends. While
this reduces the number of cars on the road, which has many positives
such as reduced traffic and emissions, friends can often distract the
driver. Teaching people how to drive with others should reduce this
distraction and reduce accidents. Implementing these changes will go
a long way in reducing accidents and making roads safer for everyone
