A Safe Driver

A Safe Driver

Over
38 thousand Americans die annually from car crashes. In order to
begin reducing these numbers, we must educate our youth on how to
drive responsibly. Whether they recognize it or not every time they
sit behind the wheel, they have the potential of putting innocent
people in harm’s way.

The
following procedures must be instilled into drivers to help decrease
this tragic statistic. A driver must maintain their vehicle in top
condition. This means the driver must make sure the tires of the
vehicle are properly inflated, the breaks and lights are functioning
properly, and their windows have clear visibility. Checking these
simple things will increase everyone’s safety.

For
the diver to be safe while driving, they must learn to drive
defensively. This can be achieved by scanning their surroundings and
being aware of small cues given by other drivers. This helps a driver
be ready to react swiftly if something were to go wrong.

Another
step a driver must take to ensure their passengers and their safety
is making sure everyone is wearing their seatbelts. They should also
make certain their mirrors, steering wheel, and seat are properly
adjusted. The driver must also remember to keep their low beams on
and only use their high beams in proper conditions.

Another
valuable tip is to only drive when in a sound state of mind. This
means to never drive tired, distracted, and under the influence of
drugs. Even being fixated on something as small as an argument or a
test can impair one’s ability to drive. A clear mind is critical in
staying alert.

Lastly,
drivers must be up to date on traffic laws. Even if someone has
completed the proper schooling to receive a license, they must keep
learning because laws are constantly being changed. Simply by being
informed tragic accidents and traffic violations can be avoided.

I
have witnessed many drivers not following these steps. Due to this, I
have seen several car accidents and have even been in one. Last
spring, I had been driving in a roundabout and was T-boned by a large
vehicle. This driver had been distracted, and because of that had not
seen me. Luckily, I had been buckled, and my vehicle had been up to
date, allowing my airbags to inflate. If I had not been a safe and
responsible driver that day, something much worse than a damaged car
could have occurred.

As
a community, we must follow these steps to decrease the deaths caused
by car crashes and increase our safety. We must learn to be defensive
and knowledgeable drivers. If not for ourselves selves then for those
who are the victims of our irresponsible actions.
