Driving
is one of the most awaited abilities a teen can earn during high
school. It allows teenagers to have a taste of the freedom they will
have once they set off to college. Though it is exhilarating and a
great achievement, many teens don’t realize how dangerous driving
can be as well. Driving requires skills which will be tested in the
driving test. However, one of the main reasons for wrecks in vehicles
isn’t a lack of knowledge on how to properly drive, but a lack of
concentration.

Having
a nice foundation in drivers ed makes the prospect of crashing
less likely. Once someone has studied all the road signs, signals,
and right of ways they learn safer ways of traveling on the road.
Having knowledge on how to react when someone slams on their brakes
in front of you, how to react when a tire pops, or when it’s ok to
speed up and slow down creates a connection between the driver and
safe reactions to emergencies that could occur on the road. Having an
understanding of the road is just one way to prevent accidents.

Another
great way to prevent accidents is to drive with people who understand
the concentration needed when driving as a newly licensed driver.
When people talk, dance, and play loud music, it’s easy for the
driver to get sucked into the chaos going on around them and to lose
focus on the road. Having a quiet environment while driving makes it
easier to concentrate on the task at hand. Another way to prevent
accidents is to make sure there’s no reason for the driver to take
their hands off the wheel. Their phones should be set to where they
receive no notifications while driving, and they should not be eating
while controlling a vehicle. People who get distracted by any of the
things listed above are more likely to crash and could die from an
accident.

I
once was in the car with my mom going to meet up with my friend at
the movies. While waiting at a red light, I saw a car run a red light
from the other side and roll three times. It was my friend’s car.
They both ended up having broken bones and concussions but survived
the accident. Her mother admitted to not fully concentrating on the
road and the task of driving. Her lack of concentration could have
ended her and her daughter’s life. This experience made not only my
friend and her mother, but me as well decide to drive only when fully
able to tackle the task at hand. Driving has to be the only job in
mind or crashes and casualties become more likely. Make sure that you
don’t drive with distractions in the car and don’t be a
distraction when others are driving so that an incident won’t
happen with you.
