As
people begin their journey to becoming a licensed driver, it is
essential that they are equipped with the rules of the road. Being
knowledgeable about driving laws and driving habits is the first step
a responsible person must take for the sake of their own lives and
others as well. Drivers ed is important because it increases
the amount of safe drivers on the road. Prior to getting on the road,
a driver should know what to expect from Point A to Point B. I
learned in drivers ed that you should drive more
defensively than offensively. An uneducated driver may assume that
the more offensively they drive, they come off as an experienced
driver. This uneducated assumption can cost the lives of other people
on the road.
In
this day and age, there is a large push in technology. Cars are now
being built to be aware of potential hazards before the driver does.
Cars that have the ability to sense danger and prevent a crash from
either happening or being worse than it is, can help numerous people
on the road. Of course with this technology, there is a price.
Although not everyone will be able to afford it based on financial
reasons, one person having a car like this may save another person’s
life.
In
my first car crash, we were coming from school in my family’s
minivan about to take a left and suddenly the tail of the car was up
in the air. Off the bat, my sister and I begin crying. The driver
that hit us was a teen driver who had previously received her
license. The second car crash, the driver behind my
family
and I attempted to switch lanes under the stoplight and slammed into
us, which caused us to hit the car in front of us. I remember
thinking as the back windshield shattered, ‘Where did mom get all
these rocks from?’ Thankfully, in both crashes, my family and I
were safe. However, to this day my mom still suffers from back pain
due to our second crash. As a teenager, I have seen friends and
family drive irresponsibility. Many of my peers text and drive, drive
after consuming alcohol, drive with no permit and I’ve seen the
consequences of their actions. I know that I have a choice though. I
know I have a choice to be responsible and limit the amount of
potential accidents on the road.
To
become a safer driver, I can educate myself further with statistics
and real life scenarios. Knowing these things will help me in case of
emergencies. One thing I do to avoid the temptation of using my phone
is putting it in my glove compartment. I also keep in mind, “A text
can wait, Your life can’t,” which has always stuck with me. I
believe if others follow in these footsteps as well as other safe
driver’s footsteps, the amount of deaths and injuries related to
driving will decrease.
