Behind the wheel of teenage driving
Behind
the wheel of teenage driving
Today
is very different than it was many years ago with distracted driving.
Years ago, we had to worry about drinking and driving, smoking
cigarettes and drivers trying to put make up on in the car. Today we
have those same issues, but we also have more things that distract
teenagers while they are behind the wheel with the big one being the
use of a cell phone. It has been proven to be very distracting to
everyone that uses a cell phone especially teenagers. We have more
deaths on the roads to distracting driving while using a cell phone.
Teens usually have at least one friend in the car if not more which
can already be a distraction. Then we have social media with apps
like snap chat and Instagram that kids will take photos of themselves
while driving and doing funny stuff with the passengers in the car.
Eyes are taken off the road for more than a few seconds which can be
very dangerous.
I
was able to take a drivers ed class thru our community
college and it was very informational of distracted drivers and smart
drivers and learning the rules on the roads. I recommend every
teenager take a drivers ed class prior to getting their permit or
driver’s license.
I
was involved in an automobile accident 5 days after receiving my
driver’s license. It was not my fault a teenage driver pulled out
in front of me by our High School and thankfully no kids were on the
sidewalk at that time because lots of kids use the sidewalk where I
ended up after I was hit. It defiantly scared me for a very long
time I couldn’t get behind the wheel because I was so scared. I
finally started to drive again, and I have been very cautious of
driving.
I
want teenagers to spread the awareness of the importance of safe
driving and that our cell phones can be placed in the glove box on
the do not disturb setting while driving. This way teen drivers can
not touch their cell phones for taking pictures, trying to find that
song on the playlist and taking or making calls. Lives can be saved!
