There
are simple measures- such as being alert while driving and
maintaining control of your vehicle- that can be taken to reduce the
risk of accidents when on the road, yet people still drive recklessly
as if they have nothing to lose. Being able to drive comes with a
huge responsibility. Not only are you in control of your life, but
you are also accountable for the lives of the other drivers who
surround you. With one mistake, you could change someone’s life
forever.

Learning
the rules of the road starts when you are young by observing how your
parents drive and quickly develops in the high school years as you
begin to develop your own habits. By instituting drivers ed
focusing first on why one needs to drive safely, then moving on how
to drive safely and the appropriate rules to follow when on the road,
the driver will gain the proper awareness of the safe way to drive.
Without this essential foundation for the driver, they may develop
the wrong understanding of driving and inadvertently cause more
accidents. When the driver knows the risks associated with driving
drunk and speeding, they are less likely to engage in that behavior.
This is all taught through a drivers ed program; through
learning the harm that these actions can cause, the number of deaths
from risky driving would drastically decrease.

As
the number of deaths fluctuates each year, the result remains
constant: lives are lost due to reckless and uneducated drivers.
There are a number of steps that drivers can take to reduce any risk
when they are on the road. When on the road, always make sure you
drive smart and avoid getting caught up in other driver’s bad
habits. Simple measures to ensure you remain safe include the
following: maintaining the mandated speed limit, keep your eyes on
the road at all times, and not driving while you are tired. Having
control over what you can do while driving to reduce your risk of
injury goes a long way to ensure your safety and safety of those
around you.

While
I haven’t experienced a major car crash or witnessed people I know
drive recklessly, I know it is a major issue that poses drivers on
the road. When I see people who are on the road who are driving in a
dangerous manner, I make sure to stay as far away from them as
possible to avoid any foreseeable accidents. By focusing on my
driving and what I can do to remain safe on the road, I am able to
maintain control of my vehicle and stay alert of other drivers around
me. Knowing the damage that reckless driving can cause, I make sure
to remind myself and other drivers to keep phones away while driving.
Being that these hand-held devices are a major distraction, ensuring
that they are far out of sight removes the potential interruption
that could take your eyes off the road.
