My driving instructor always used to tell me, “A smart driver is a
safe driver”. It is clear to me that educating our drivers before
they get on the road plays a significant role in reducing the number
of driving related accidents and deaths. Besides drivers ed, it
is important for drivers to get as much practice as possible with a
responsible adult. This means any time they want to go somewhere, or
even if they are driving their parents places, they should take
advantage of the opportunity, because while it might be a drag in the
moment, it is their duty to become safe and confident enough to drive
without that responsible adult. I have never been driving during an
accident, but I have been a passenger in a few minor ones —
thankfully nothing too serious. When my parents got into a minor
accident, I was able to learn from that experience and be thankful
nothing worse happened. I never want to be the cause of an accident,
even if it were to be something small. This is why I always have my
phone on silent and out of sight, because I know that is the main
distraction for me as well almost any other new driver on the road. I
think it is also smart to just be consciously aware of how you are
driving. My parents always use the example “drive like your kids
live here”, and I think that if everyone were to drive like that
and use that kind of empathy, we would probably see the number of
accidents to decrease.
