Importance of Driver Awareness and Safety

Vehicular
related deaths and injuries are an infinitely important issue and we
as a society need to do everything we can to assist and educate those
on the road. The number of driving related deaths and injuries is to
high. Many of these deaths and injuries are from a preventable cause,
that cause being distracted driving.

In
order to prevent future tragedy on the road we need to put a decisive
end to the preventable causes of vehicular accidents. A big
contributor to distracted driving is phones , which I’m certain
most everyone has seen someone on their phone while behind the wheel
of a moving vehicle. A thing that we as a society need to understand
better is that technology is great and we should appreciate what we
have, but we can’t let technology inhibit us, especially on the
road. To prevent distracted driving, we need to make sure we are
being conscientious, we need to understand that the small actions we
take can have a much larger long lasting impact. Reading a message or
notification on your phone is something so short term and small
compared to a permanent injury the premature end to a life. The
freedom to own a phone and a car are important. From my view the
phones and the cars aren’t the problem. The problem is the
disassociation with the actions we take and the potential
consequences of said actions. When behind the wheel we need to
understand that this is a powerful machine that needs to be operated
with care, as well as being the center of our attention from the time
we get behind the wheel and the time we leave the vehicle. We need to
understand that when we get into a car we need to be careful and make
sure that we are focused on being safe. Drivers ed is something
that really helped me understand this, as well as other personal
experiences.

I’ve
known very good people who have been killed by reckless driving, it’s
something I don’t like thinking about. The thought that someone as
young as a highschooler could have what could have been a long
successful life violently ended in a car crash is greatly upsetting
to me. I’ve known people who’ve gotten both severe and minor
injuries in car crashes. We need to make sure that people are
properly taught road safety and that people have plenty of
opportunities to learn about it. I also believe that for the people
who cannot drive safely, there should be alternatives for them so
they can still live their lives as well. Alternatives like public
transport would greatly reduce the number of people who could
potentially drive recklessly.

I
conclude that driver safety and awareness are of major importance. We
need to be safe and educated when behind the wheel of a vehicle.
Driver safety and awareness helps protect the driver and everyone
around them, we owe it to all those who have been harmed in vehicle
accidents to be safe and aware drivers.
