Responsibility
of the Driver

In
modern America, the most common type of transportation is a personal
vehicle. The vehicle transports people from location to location on
the established roads and highways. Traversing the roads and highways
is dependent on the driver of the personal vehicle. The driver must
comply with the established laws and regulations of the road to
maintain order while minimizing confusion. For a driver to earn his
or her license, they must first be educated on the laws and
regulations of the road. Although all licensed drivers are educated,
there are still many vehicle accidents to this day. Either, drivers
are still confused about regulations and proper behavior behind the
wheel or drivers are disobeying the regulations with intent.

I
do not believe the blame is on education. The safety courses are
better than no sort of education at all. The safety courses are
designed for the drivers to gain an understanding of the rules. The
crucial lessons focus on the interaction between pedestrians and
drivers because of the high risk of accidents and potential deaths. I
believe that the most effective way to reduce deaths related to
driving is to nullify distractions. Today, smartphones and electronic
devices pull us away from what is in front of our eyes. Texts, calls,
and mobile games contribute to the potent distraction of the
smartphone. Without the distraction, drivers would be more focused on
the road and more aware of their surroundings. As technology
constantly improves, vehicles are becoming increasingly supportive of
cell phone capabilities. Software such as Apple CarPlay is meant to
reduce the amount of cell phone use in the vehicle, but this software
now shifts the distraction to the console screen. To reduce the
distractions, the cell phone can be placed out of reach of the
driver, or completely powered off; the driver can also select a radio
station, or personal playlist before driving. Reducing those
distractions forces the driver to focus on the road. I have fallen
victim to distractions.

Unfortunately,
I have been involved in a car accident where it was my fault. I was
pulling out of the school parking lot and was driving up to the
intersection when I realized the car in front of me slammed their
brakes, I then slammed my brakes, but I was too close. If I had left
more space between myself and the vehicle in front of me, I would
still have my car. The most important detail was that I was adjusting
my cell phone holder; I was distracted. Such a little detail that
cost me my car, some friendships, and self-esteem. In the end, I
should have adjusted the holder before I left the school so that my
focus was completely on the road. The most important advice would be
to handle all distractions while parked so they are no distractions
on the road.
