Drivers ed should be important to everyone. There are nearly
1.25 million deaths related to car crashes every year worldwide.
Almost 3,300 deaths every day. According to the graph on this
scholarship’s webpage, over 30 thousand people died in 2012 alone.
This is quadruple the amount of people that died in the revolutionary
war, and the same amount of people that died in the Korean war.
Everyone who drives a vehicle should be required to take a driving
course. Even if you personally have taken a driving course, others
have not. Car crashes can happen to anyone even if they drive
“perfectly”. There other factors that they cannot control, such
as other drivers. This means that everyone that is on the road should
be educated on defensive driving.
Before anyone can get their license, they should be required to take
a course on road safety. This would help reduce car crashes, because
many people who have a license earned it without taking a course. I
personally have not taken a course but plan to in the future. I feel
that driving tests currently do not relate to real world driving. I
live in a small town where I took my driving test. I saw maybe 10
other cars during the entire test, and never once practiced driving
on highway. This means that I was not adequately prepared to drive in
larger cities that have 2 or more lanes of traffic. Driving tests
should require these situations in their courses because highways are
where most collisions happen.
I have never personally been in a car accident, but I know multiple
friends who have had family members die in car accidents. One friend
had to move schools because both his parents died in a head on
collision. This was due to the other driver texting and driving.
Texting and driving should be illegal in all states and for everyone.
In Missouri it is currently legal to text and drive if you are over
the age of 21. This should be made illegal for anyone driving a
vehicle.
I plan on taking a defensive driving course in order to better
prepare myself for others on the road. I feel as if I am a safe
driver when no cars around, but I want to be prepared for other
situations. Texting and driving will be something that I will never
do, and I will always wear my seatbelt.
