Educate
The Drivers

In
America, an average of 34,000 people die each year as a result of
driving” (Dmv). Ever since technology has evolved, especially in
our transportation there have been lots of reckless driving and as a
result of that, lives lost. An important thing to do is educate new
drivers about everything they need to know before they start driving.
Although this may seem time consuming it is better than having 34,000
deaths each year just because of ignorance. According to D R Mayhew a
researcher he states “… driving is a complex, self paced activity
involving a myriad of basic tasks (for example, steering, braking)
and higher order skills (for example, hazard perception, problem
solving), many of which are essential to safe vehicle operation
(Mayhew). This demonstrates the complexity of driving and why it is
necessary to educate new drivers about everything they need to know
in order to be a responsible driver. The steps that can be taken to
reduce the number of deaths is first bring awareness to the problem,
then implement a short but effective program that targets teens
specifically since they are the ones that cause the most number of
accidents than any other year range. I have been in a car accident
when I was small and me plus all my siblings were sick and my mom had
to take us to the hospital when all of a sudden someone smashed into
the back of our car and lo and behold who was it: teenagers.
According to a law firm that represents injured people
auto
accidents are the leading cause of death for teens ages 15 to 20.
When teen drivers ride with other passengers, their risk of being in
a fatal car crash doubles. Overall, teenagers underestimate or are
unable to recognize hazardous driving conditions” (Snyder). They
had been driving recklessly and didn’t realize that the traffic had
come to a stop. The steps that I’ll take in order to be a safer
driver is make sure to read all the manuals and make sure that I know
all the rules of the road in order to be a safe and aware driver.
Another thing that I’ll do is make sure I take as many practice
tests before going out into the street. What I’ll do for others is
encourage them to be well prepared and not make any irresponsible
choices, especially just to seem “cool” in front of their
friends. Some more effective solutions are to double down on programs
and policies that have already shown to be effective including law
policies and changes to road infrastructure as to lessen the number
of crashes that occur in those places. Another thing is that I’ll
show them the statistics in order to make them realize how dangerous
driving actually is and how they should make sure to be careful and
be an aware driver while they’re on the go.
