We
All Have an Impact

One
afternoon, my father was driving home with my baby brother in the
back seat. He was hit from behind while waiting to turn left. The
young driver had been texting and, although no one was injured, the
accident could have been prevented if the driver had not been on his
phone. Although I’ve never been in an accident, hearing about my
father’s experience reminds me that when you drive, you are
responsible for the safety of other drivers. His story reminds us
that, no matter the circumstance, you must drive responsibly.

It
is extremely important to ensure all drivers are aware of the dangers
of irresponsible driving. Every day, people decide to get behind the
wheel and drive. Every day, people die as a result of car accidents.
The statistics are not intended to frighten people, but rather inform
them so they can comprehend the significance of their role in working
to make the roads safer.

So,
how can we spread awareness? It starts in drivers ed
classes, where students are already learning about driving
responsibly. By bringing the statistics to their attention, students
can learn to utilize the safe driving skills they are learning.
Overtime, safe driving will transform into a habit that they can
continue practicing for the rest of their life.

There
are various precautions that can be taken to limit accidents and
fatalities on the road. Through turning off their cellphone and loud
music, drivers are minimizing distractions inside the car. As a
result, their full attention can be placed on the road before them.
These precautions can be enforced through legislation in their state.
Drivers can support the passing of laws that prevent texting or phone
usage while driving in order to decrease the chances of a
distraction. Additionally, not driving while under the influence of
alcohol and taking rest stops on long road trips ensures that the
individual is able to drive attentively.

Personally,
I can leave my cellphone in my purse while driving, listen to music
at a low volume, and make sure conversations with passengers do not
become distracting. On nights out, since I don’t drink, I can offer
rides to people who have been drinking to prevent any accidents on
the road. It’s important to understand that the we all must work to
implement safety measures when driving in order to decrease car
accident fatalities. If we don’t change how we go about driving,
there is no way we can expect the roads to be safer.

Although
the statistics of car accident fatalities is ominous, it is important
to spread awareness of the statistics so the public can understand
the issue’s grandeur. Through drivers ed instruction and
taking steps ourselves to drive more responsibly, we can work to
decrease the number of car accidents and deaths. When you step behind
the wheel, you have an impact on the safety of everyone on the road.
Choose to drive responsibly.
