Reckless and
distracted driving is the cause of thousands of tragedies in the
United States. Driving irresponsibly does not only put the driver and
any of their passengers in danger but it also poses a threat to other
drivers on the road. It is important to complete in-class driving
education classes as well as driving with an instructor to ensure
that students will learn rules and helpful tips in order to drive
safely. Another way we can keep people on the road safer is by making
sure that everyone remembers to wear their seat belts and for parents
to make sure that their kids are strapped into their car seats
safely. It is also important to go into auto-shops for brake and oil
checks, as well as to switch out winter and summer tires. I am a high
school senior, so most of my friends are driving. The majority of
them took classes online, whereas I took a one-week long class in
person. A few of those friends drive recklessly, whether that is
speeding, ignoring stop signs, or driving under the influence. I fear
for their lives and the lives of others because they are smart girls
who make incredibly stupid decisions. They are also influencing a
younger friend that we share, which angers me because they should be
acting as responsible role-models who our younger friend can look up
to and rely on. I find that my concerns go unheard by them, but I
myself try to ensure that I drive as safely as I can by paying
attention to my surrounds, scanning the road in front of me,
signaling when I turn and change lanes, and make sure that I know
where I am going so that I do not have to make any unsafe,
split-second decisions while driving. Texts, calls, and other things
involving multitasking while driving can wait until I reach my
destination safely. If anything were to happen to someone because of
own irresponsible driving, I would never be able to forgive myself.
