Driver’s
Education -Driver Responsibility
Over
80 percent of drivers admit to their hazardous behavior while
driving, such as changing clothes, steering with foot, texting and
etc. I personally have been in a position multiple times with an
irresponsible driver. At the time I didn’t think much of it but
afterwards I thought of the fact that I could have lost my life
because of something so careless. This is why drivers need driver’s
education to show them scenarios of what could happen if they are not
careful. All drivers should practice safe driving to reduce the
number of deaths related to driving.
The
purpose of drivers ed is to give people the knowledge and
skills needed for vehicle safety as a driver. Having this knowledge
provides drivers with information on what to do and not to do while
driving. When placed in a situation that could lead to an accident,
drivers are able to react quickly to prevent the accident and
possible death. Therefore, learning and following rules taught
through drivers ed could save many lives. However, due to
cell phones, drivers ed alone will not significantly reduce
the number of traffic related accidents and deaths.
Recently
laws have been created to address the issue of cell phone use while
driving. Additional steps need to be added to drivers ed
course to promote safe driving. For example, anyone applying for a
license should have to complete virtual scenarios where the driver is
texting or dialing their phones and have to react to their car going
into the lane of a car approaching them head on. The experience alone
should help them to see how quickly your life can be put in danger
because of one text or phone call. I experienced this personally
whole riding with my mom on the way to school. She attempted to
answer a call and almost ran off the road. It really shook us all up.
Potential drivers should have to complete multiple scenarios to make
sure they completely understand the danger involved in using a cell
phone while driving.
Since
the incident with my mom almost running off the road, I make sure she
does not answer her phone while driving. I remind her to practice
what she preaches. As a young adult, I am like most – addicted to my
cell phone. However, when I am driving, I do not touch my cell phone.
As a matter of fact, I let my friends and family know when I leave
and arrive to my destination so they will not call or text me. I
don’t want to even be tempted to pick up the phone. I can help
others by being a role model and asking my friends to not use the
phone while they are drive. If they chose to text or talk on the
phone while driving, I chose to not ride with them.
Thank
you for reading my essay. If selected to receive the scholarship, I
will use it to purse my dream of becoming a nurse. In addition, I
promise to always remember that being behind the wheel of a car is a
serious responsibility.
